Tony Ashwin Kanal (born August 27, 1970) is an American musician and producer. Kanal is the bassist for third wave ska band No Doubt and produced Together as One, the debut album of reggae singer Elan Atias.

Early life
Kanal's parents, originally from India, raised him and his brother in London, England.In 1981, the family moved to the United States and opened a store named "Kanal's Gifts and Fashion".

Musical career
At age 15 he met a fellow saxophone player Eric Carpenter at band camp. Despite not wanting to practice in the football field early in the morning, it was a requirement to play in the Anaheim High School jazz band. After band camp, Eric had the opportunity to play bass guitar in the jazz band but instead, lent Tony his bass as Eric's brother Dave taught Tony the instrument.

Tony stayed in the jazz band for the next few years. He changed his mind in 1987 when he saw No Doubt, a ska punk band from Anaheim, perform. Learning that the original bass player, Chris Leal, was about to be replaced, he took his chances and auditioned for the position. After hearing him play through the songs, Tony was the new bass player for No Doubt.

In May 1988 Tony helped his friend Eric Carpenter join the band. Alan Meade was contemplating leaving the band and after Eric and Chris Webb helped get Tony into the band Tony returned the favor. Eric was No Doubt's second and last saxophone player. Tony helped the band with manager duties and they opened for the Red Hot Chili Peppers in mid 1988. Michael Balzary, otherwise known as Flea, helped the struggling but still growing band. He produced two demos for No Doubt that helped land them a record deal with Interscope Records.

In October 1991 No Doubt hit the studio with help of producer Dito Goodwin. Even though unhappy with the result, the band toured in support of the album but No Doubt did not gain any popularity outside the West Coast.

When Interscope Records began turning songs down, No Doubt did it on their own. Over two years they recorded ten songs and released it independently. After hearing some of their independent work, Interscope gave No Doubt the go-ahead to start work on another album.

During a party celebrating the release of No Doubt's The Singles 1992-2003, the directors of The 1 Second Film, and Kanal donated US$100, becoming an executive producer.

When No Doubt went on hiatus, Kanal began a career behind the mixing console. In 2004, Kanal produced three songs for the soundtrack to 50 First Dates, one of which was a reggae cover of Bryan Ferry's 1985 song "Slave to Love" by Kanal's friend Elan Atias with a cameo from Gwen Stefani. Kanal then producing Atias's debut album, Together as One, which was released in June 2006. He also created several remixes, including ones of Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" and Gang of Four's "Ether".

Personal life
Tony Kanal was the long-time boyfriend of Gwen Stefani, lead singer of their band No Doubt. Kanal initially rejected her, later commenting, "It was pretty much an unspoken rule that nobody dates Gwen…almost like a bunch of brothers and our sister." The two eventually began dating but kept the relationship secret.

Kanal broke up with Stefani prior to the recording of No Doubt's breakthrough album Tragic Kingdom. Many of the songs on that album were written by Stefani about the breakup, most notably the hit "Don't Speak." Many years later, Stefani co-wrote her hit song "Cool" about their relationship as friends for her 2004 debut solo album Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

Kanal is dating the American actress Erin Lokitz.

Biography
Young's parents were hippies, and his mother left the family when he was young. He has four brothers: Alex, Jeff, Damian and Aaron.

Young was exposed to rock music very early by the 1990s California music scene. He became a fan of the band No Doubt from the start, attending their concerts after they formed in 1987. The same year he began playing the drums. In 1989, No Doubt announced that they were looking for a new drummer, and Young auditioned. At the audition, he lied saying that he had been playing for some time now.

Young is known among fans for his affinity for wearing thongs during performances, and rebellious hair (mohawks, etc...) He can often be seen topless and in his thong in the band's music videos.

When not performing and touring, Young likes to spend his time out on the golf courses as he is an avid golf player. Young participated in VH-1's Fairway to Heaven during 1998 and caught the eye of former shock-rocker and golfer Alice Cooper.

In October 1999, on the last night of the California Club Tour at The Fillmore in San Francisco, California, Adrian proposed to his girlfriend Nina Kent on stage in front of the thousand-plus fans. Young kneeled down on one knee, professed his love and asked her to marry him. On 16 January 2000, Young married his fiancée, Nina Kent. Kent gave birth to a son, Mason James Young on 9 February 2002. During gaps between No Doubt albums, Young tours with such bands as Bow Wow Wow and Bing Ji Ling, playing the drums. He also played the drums on many of the tracks on Here's to the Mourning, the 2005 album by alternative rock band, Unwritten Law, as well as the 2006 release "Awakened by Silence" from the band VAJA.

Young will play on Rockstar: Supernova runner-up Dilana's upcoming album. On 28 November 2006, Dilana released the first singles "Supersoul", and a cover of The Police classic "Roxanne" on iTunes, Napster and other digital download websites.

He is a regular fill in drummer for The Vandals.
Both Young and Tony Kanal were psychology majors in college.
Young has only co-written two No Doubt songs: "Open the Gate", and "Move On".
He has the old No Doubt logo tattooed on his upper right thigh, and the date "1969" tattooed on his inner right wrist.
He is also the drummer for band member, Gabrial McNair's second band, Oslo.
Young learned much of his drum technique from Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who produced No Doubt at one point.
Playgirl magazine once gave him the "Sexiest Musician" award in one of their issues.
Young plays Orange County Drums and Percussion drums, Zildjian cymbals and drumsticks, Drum Workshop pedals and hardware, and Remo drumheads.

Stefani steps up the fun for Blaisdell show

ONE OF the risks that Hawaii runs as "Crossroads of the Pacific" is catching big-name stars on a downswing during their concert touring schedule.

Acts tend to book a show here after a long stretch on the road, with some making it painfully obvious while performing that they would rather be on a plane heading back to the mainland. Other times, catching a band as they prepare to head for Asia or Australia reveals a set full of missteps as they try to work out all the kinks.

Luckily, neither of those scenarios played out Friday as Gwen Stefani performed the first of two sold-out concerts at the Blaisdell Arena. She was in top form, giving fans close to two hours of nonstop entertainment after an opening set by former Hawaii resident Hoku Ho.

DON'T EVEN bother to ask -- No Doubt wasn't in the building, and Stefani stuck solely to material off "Love, Angel, Music, Baby" and "The Sweet Escape."

The only connections to the band that started her career some 15 years ago were the presence of long-time touring band member Stephen Bradley (who celebrated his birthday Friday), and a mention that Stefani was indeed working on new tracks with her bandmates.

As sirens blared and the Harajuku Girls roamed about the lower level of the arena, Stefani kicked off her set with "Sweet Escape," instantly bringing the crowd to its feet. Fake money rained from the ceiling during the first verse of "Rich Girl," followed by the first of more than a half-dozen costume changes and more material off her newest album.

"Yummy" brought a strange retro vibe, with Stefani rocking an apron and white gloves as the Harajuku Girls danced in neon-colored dresses that looked more like tutus. Then, before moving into "4 in the Morning" and "Luxurious," she took the time to address her fans.
"You have no idea how happy we are to be here right now," Stefani said. "It's the end of the rainbow, really."

ONE OF the more impressive aspects of Stefani's performance was her ability to keep the crowd's attention through some of her most forgettable solo material.

After jumping off stage to accept a lei from one adoring fan, she wisely pulled the plug early on "Early Winter."

Sure, it was a calculated move to allow for yet another costume change, but the only redeeming quality of that performance was bassist-vocalist Gail Ann Dorsey taking over at the end.

"Wind it Up" and "Danger Zone" were tolerable for only Stefani's most hard-core fans, but she gets bonus points for kicking it up a notch with her stage presence.

She ran from one end of the stage to another, interacting with fans in the first few rows before acknowledging those in the risers and toward the back of the house. Large video screens on either side of the stage allowed everyone to see how genuinely happy Stefani appeared to be involved with the crowd.

After a funked-up version of "Hollaback Girl" with her six-piece band, she expressed her gratitude.

"I feel like I'm at home," said Stefani. "When I was 19, I went on my first trip ever ... and I went to Maui."

She went on to talk about Hawaiian heirloom jewelry and how much she wanted to buy some during that vacation here, but didn't have the money at the time.

"But now, I have like 14 bangles," Stefani crowed. "And it's all thanks to you guys!"

THE HIGHLIGHT of the evening came a few minutes later, when Stefani bolted from the stage in the middle of "Cool" to be with her fans.

It was obvious that something was up, as Blaisdell security stretched yellow tape near a section of risers before the song started.

In a move probably executed numerous times during "The Sweet Escape" tour, the singer sprinted to a small stage behind the sound board with two members of the band, mugging for the crowd and nearly inducing heart attacks for teenage girls lucky enough to get near her.

Shortly afterward, she surprised her own security staff by rushing to the top of the risers on the Ewa side of the arena, then running to the top of the mauka risers before returning to the stage.

Amazingly, it seemed very few people made an attempt to touch Stefani -- in typical Hawaii fashion, everyone was well-behaved and respected her personal space. She even managed to pick up another lei from a fan during her jaunt around the arena.

Wrapping up with "Orange County," Stefani extended the song with an interlude that included a thank-you to her crew and a moment in the spotlight for her eight backup dancers. She also stopped to accept gifts from her fans, including a hand-decorated jacket and a drawing of her young son.

Even after an encore of "Real Thing" and "What You Waiting For," it was apparent that Stefani felt a strong connection to the crowd. With more than 40 shows under her belt this year and a full European tour planned after a short month off, one would think she'd rather be ensconced in a five-star hotel with her family while in Hawaii.

Judging by her comments throughout the night and a willingness to stay and sign a few autographs before leaving the stage, Stefani hasn't forgotten those who helped her achieve success.

But Gwen, do us all a favor: The next time you come to Hawaii, bring the rest of No Doubt with you!

Dance pop mega-star Stefani thrills younger fans

Add this to the list of things you don't see in Hawai'i everyday: A 37-year-old girl from Orange County, Calif., with dyed platinum blond hair leading a sold-out Blaisdell Arena crowd in the chant, "This (expletive) is bananas ... b-a-n-a-n-a-s!"

Asking several thousand fans to jump up and down and chant "ooh-ooh" as if grooving at Studio 54, and seeing them comply willingly? Homegirl managed that, too.

That's the kind of cheeky power Gwen Stefani — dance pop mega-star, No Doubt force of nature, hot mom, no one's hollaback girl — has over a crowd.

She had them eating out of her hand from the second she gyrated out on stage Friday night, for the first of two Honolulu shows on her continuing "The Sweet Escape Tour."

Through 100 minutes, 16 songs culled from her two solo albums and 10 costume changes, Stefani was everything her fans waited six months to see and more. She was infectiously energetic. She seemed genuinely moved by the crowd's adulation and was never shy about showing it. She even jumped into the masses and sang a couple of songs from the tops of the risers, though it seemed she came close to being mobbed by fans.

In moments such as these, Gwen Stefani was all the way real — a ska-punk girl next door turned international superstar. Still wonderfully nerdy. Still goofy with amazement at her success.

If only Stefani's many ill-fitting songs and too-choreographed stage production came off as real, I might have enjoyed her show a lot more.

Instead, the show left me reminiscing about a Blaisdell night five years ago, with a Stefani who seemed far more spontaneous a stage presence. A Stefani who was more comfortable belting the new wave rock 'n' ska of No Doubt than playing diva. A vocalist more believable and relatable, sharing the real-life hell of songs like "Don't Speak" and "Ex-Girlfriend" instead of spelling out fruit.

Now, I didn't want Gwen even touching "Just A Girl" or "Sunday Morning" last night without indispensible No Doubt mates Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young by her side. And to her credit, she didn't. But I can't say I really wanted to hear her yodel either. And that, she did.

Dancing cops, her quartet of dancers, the Harajuku Girls, sporting prison wear, and Stefani in striped hot pants, a matching top and black hose, no less, couldn't drain the bouncy fun out of her opening song, "The Sweet Escape." And her hit, "Rich Girl" continued the momentum, with its infectious "Fiddler on the Roof"-on-steroids electro-beat, Stefani's golden ponytail bouncing to well-timed moves and a shower of faux greenbacks falling from the rafters.

What followed wasn't always as fun.

Dumbed-down Stefani bubblegum pop filler like "Yummy," "Danger Zone" and "Now That You Got It" were tough to sit through, no matter how many costume changes. But man, the mother of year-old Kingston James McGregor Rossdale can still wear whatever she darn well pleases, and wear it well.

Some of the fashion selections our Gwen threw together? A Japanese-inspired dress with a puffed-out miniskirt and what appeared to be a faux obi riding her lower back. A patterned black-and-white vest over a white collared shirt-and-tie combo matched with sparkly-red hot pants. A spangly black-and-white cut-off top and track pants combo that, while nicely showing off Stefani's very tight tummy, looked more like the required uniform for a spinning class taught by Donatella Versace.

Thankfully, Stefani was smart enough to pull her show back from the brink whenever it threatened to collapse into danceteria clockwork. Ballads like "4 in the Morning," "Cool" and "Wonderful Life" were full of the cool, retro, real-girl-in-love lyrics that are Stefani's aces in the hole, solo and with No Doubt. While keeping Stefani wonderfully alone on stage, the ballads also showed that she is a terrific live vocalist, capable of considerable power and subtle nuances.

That said, the less written about the techno-march disaster that is "Wind It Up" — which managed to wean a special kind of horror out of the benign art of yodeling and beloved musical "The Sound of Music" all in one shot — the better.

Stefani's six-piece band, complete with a brass section featuring longtime No Doubt tour regulars Stephen Bradley and Gabriel McNair, was wonderfully tight. Former David Bowie bassist/vocalist Gail Ann Dorsey even got to show off her considerable vocal skills on the lovely ballad "The Real Thing." (Bonus points to Stefani for even daring to match vocal skills with the simply amazing Dorsey on this one.)

The audience was heavy with young girls — singing every word of every song by heart — some in klatches of a half dozen or more, some accompanied by moms and dads. A dearth of folks in the crowd much older than 30 who weren't with their kids was as clear a sign as any that No Doubt fans largely chose to sit out this Gwen appearance until the band's return to recording and touring, which Stefani promised was a "go" post-tour.

When all was said and done, however, Stefani's always front-and-center, always very real appreciation for her fans was likely the best memory culled from last night's show.

When not jumping into the audience and trying to scale the loges with security hot on her heels, Stefani shared stories about taking baby Kingston for his first dip into Hawaiian waters this week and being too broke to buy Hawaiian heirloom jewelry on her first Maui trip at age 19.

In times like these, Stefani showed the fun, endearing and still very grateful side of her that all the costume changes, unnecessary stage production, slickly dumb songs and accompanying bling can't bury.

Until she returns to Hawai'i with No Doubt — writer crosses his fingers here — this would have to do.

TORY leader David Cameron’s wife says she secretly dreams of dressing like Gwen Stefani.

Samantha Cameron, 36, said the pop star — famed for her tummy-revealing tops and combat trousers — was her “alter ego”.

The brunette said: “I’ve always wanted to dye my hair blonde.

“Everytime I see her I go, ‘God, I wish I looked like that!’”

Asked about her hubby’s fashion advice, she told US fashion mag Harper’s Bazaar: “He’s very much like, ‘be who you are’. But I’m not such a wacky dresser.

“I never wear anything much above the knee.”

Samantha, who is the creative director of Bond Street stationery firm Smythson, said she did not have much spare cash for designer clobber.

And she listed Topshop and French Connection as her favourite high street shops.

She also revealed that Jamie Oliver fan Mr Cameron does most of the cooking at their posh home in Kensington, West London.

A word of warning to those attending Gwen Stefani's two sold-out concerts at the Blaisdell Arena this weekend: Please do not scream for any No Doubt songs.

This time, baby, it's all about her and her solo career.

While Stefani and her ska-influenced musical cohorts have been regular visitors to the islands since late 1995, the news was out as early as August 2002 -- the last time No Doubt played here -- that Stefani was primed and ready to break out on her own. Big time.

Hawaii has always taken the fashion-conscious "girl next door" from California's Orange County to heart -- ticket sales demanded two shows from Stefani and her Harajuku Girls Friday and Saturday. Stefani's still hot, and now a top pop star in her own right.

HER STATUS was secured when she appeared on "American Idol" last season not once, but twice, as a "celebrity mentor" to the contestants, and as a performer on the two-night special "Idol Gives Back."
But Hawaii fans knew of her ascending stardom right off the bat, when No Doubt opened for 311 at the now-defunct After Dark nightclub on Nimitz Highway in 1995. It was just before the band's third album, "Tragic Kingdom" (originally released on the Los Angeles indie label Trauma Records), went national. Once songs "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak" broke out, there was no stopping the charismatic Stefani and company.

The band returned the next year for a set at the Big Mele festival at scenic Kualoa Ranch, as part of a bill that included the Dance Hall Crashers, Cypress Hill and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Stefani, in her then-familiar street skate girl persona, commanded the crowd with ease.

In May of '98, No Doubt brought along one of its influences, the British ska band Madness, for a memorable show at Richardson Field.

Buoyed by the hits "Ex-Girlfriend" and "Simple Kind of Life" from the "Return of Saturn" album, No Doubt played the University of Hawaii's Andrews Amphitheatre in October 2000. And by the time August of '02 rolled around for the Blaisdell Arena show as part of the "Rock Steady" tour, Stefani and the band were at the top of their game.

One memorable image from that concert was seeing Stefani perched on the shoulders of her former beau, bassist Tony Kanal, their faces aglow as the audience heartily sang the band's lovers rock hit "Underneath It All."

"Princess Gwen" would marry the handsome Gavin Rossdale from the British band Bush the following month.

With the help of her monster hit "Hollaback Girl" from her first solo album "Love. Angel. Music. Baby.," and capitalizing on her love for the Japanese fashion scene, Stefani took a colorful and energetic show on the road throughout North America in 2005. While Stefani had to tone down her dance moves and revealing stage wear for her Malaysian concert in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, due to protests from a Muslim student group, expect her to hit the stage in full glam and glitz in Honolulu, as she finishes up the current leg of "The Sweet Escape" tour.

Stefani also comes to town -- with year-old son Kingston in tow -- as a two-time nominee in this year's Teen Choice Awards. She's up for Best Female Artist and Best Single ("The Sweet Escape," featuring Akon, also is a MTV Music Video award nominee for Most Earthshattering Collaboration). The ceremony will be televised on Fox Sunday night.

In concert, expect a generous sampling from her two albums, including "Hollaback Girl," "Rich Girl" (with its "Fiddler on the Roof" swipe), "Wind It Up" (ditto "The Sound of Music"), "Luxurious," "What You Waiting For?," "Yummy," "Now That You Got It" and "4 in the Morning," a collaboration with Kanal.

Speaking of her No Doubt mate, she reportedly still wants to do another album with the band. In fact, they all did an encore together at her Irvine, Calif., shows in June.

So there's still some hope that No Doubt may return to the islands.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Gwen Stefani was a good girl, just like she promised.

The American pop singer wowed fans in Muslim-majority Malaysia on Tuesday, dressed demurely to show virtually no skin after Islamic critics claimed that her revealing clothes could corrupt the country's youth.

"I am very inspired tonight. ... It is great to be here again," Stefani, 37, told some 7,000 cheering, screaming fans at an indoor stadium on the latest leg of her Sweet Escape world tour.

"The Sweet Escape" was her first song after she burst onto the stage, wearing a black leotard under a white short-sleeved shirt and black-and-white striped hot pants suit, with black gloves up to her elbows.

She changed costumes for every song — putting on a cape once and tying a cloth around her waist like a skirt — but made sure she was fully covered while she belted out "Rich Girl," "Wind it Up," and "Hollaback Girl" among others.

International media photographers were not allowed to take pictures at the concert for copyright reasons. Fans had to leave their cameras outside.

But most fans in the stadium thought the protesters had gone overboard with their criticism.

"I think they were making a big ho-ha for no reason. Even the local artists, they dress even much worse, much more indecent," said Denise Chan, a 15-year-old ethnic Chinese.

About 60 percent of Malaysia's 26 million people are Malay Muslims, while ethnic Chinese — who are Christians and Buddhists — make up 25 percent. Ethnic Indians — most of them Hindus — are about 10 percent.

While Islam is the official religion, Malaysia does not consider itself a theocratic Islamic country.

However, most fans said their esteem for Stefani has gone up because of her respect for Malaysia's cultural values.

"All international artists have to dress down a bit to respect our religion. When you come to any country you have to respect the culture," said Linda Yusof, 33, a Malay Muslim and fan.

Malaysia's government guidelines for public performances require a female artist to cover up from the top of her chest to her knees, including shoulders. No jumping, shouting or throwing of objects on stage or at the audience is allowed. Performers may not hug or kiss, and their clothes must not have obscene or drug-related images or messages.

A local company that organized a Pussycat Dolls concert last year was fined 10,000 ringgit (US$2,857; €2,100) after the American girl group was found to have flouted decency regulations.

In an interview with the local entertainment magazine Galaxie, Stefani said she made a lot of changes to her concert just for Malaysia, calling it a "major sacrifice."

"I've been in the music industry for 20 years and this is the first time that I'm facing opposition from people who have misunderstood me," Stefani was quoted as saying.

"I'm not a bad girl," she said.

Gwen Stefani made it to Kuala Lumpur, and her adoring fans were sure she felt welcome.

The night air at the Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil, Selangor, was thick with anticipation. Gwen Stefani’s fans did not wonder if the singer would deliver a good concert (that was guaranteed) but whether her concert would go on at all.

Rumours of possible protests outside the venue made the crowd anxious. “Do you think she’ll cancel? She might, for safety reasons,” a group of pre-teens agonised.

So, when the lights went down, the fans went wild. You can just imagine the screams and cheers that broke out among the 8,000-strong crowd. Hardly anyone remained in her seat.

Stefani is a true professional. No way would she have disappointed her fans, even if it meant wearing an extra layer of tights!

Strains of The Sweet Escape, the title track from her latest album, signalled the beginning of the “Gwen experience”. From the get-go, the crowd – men, women, teens, tweens and kids – were mesmerised by the 37-year-old platinum blonde prancing on the stage in front of them.

“Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! Selamat malam. I can’t believe I am finally back in Malaysia. Thank you for having me. I am so lucky to be here and I want you all to know that I know that.

“I remember the audience in Malaysia being very loud and amazing, so let’s hear you,” said Stefani, and the crowd obliged.

She further endeared herself to her audience when she spoke about her “Malaysian” connection.

“I am sure many of you don’t know that I have family here. My father-in-law’s wife of more than 20 years is from Malaysia, so I have a connection here in Malaysia.

“I spent today visiting my Malaysian relatives with (her baby) Kingston and got a taste of Malaysia ? I got to experience your culture.” That sent the crowd roaring.

Backed by six musicians and eight dancers, Stefani performed 16 songs from her two solo albums, Love, Angel, Music, Baby and The Sweet Escape.

She may not have the best vocals in the business but her concert was fun, with a dose of wackiness. It was like watching 16 mini music videos, live. The performances had all the elements you see in her music videos – outlandish costumes (Stefani had about nine costume changes), fantastic choreography and a touch of drama.

The highlight of the concert, however, came towards the end, when Gwen ran to the back of the stadium, followed by some of her musicians, and jumped onto a mini stage.

Fans seated at the back and on the tiers were ecstatic tto see Stefani up close. And when she jumped onto a row of folded seats, fans grabbed her outstretched hands. When her bodyguard tried to push her back, she pushed him aside gently and let her fans reach out to her.

By the end of the concert, it was evident that everyone had had a great time, including Stefani. Despite minor irritations – the sound was not great, cameras and drinks were not allowed in, etc – it had been a truly sweet escape indeed.

Fashion police and Malaysian time can’t keep a good performer down. Our writer has her socks blown away by Gwen Stefani, the consummate professional.

The queue was already half way in before I noticed the security guards frisking the concert-goers’ bags. I scanned the big billboard for the dreaded words. Yup, it was emblazoned loud and clear: No photography allowed.

Stifling a sigh of resignation, I trailed Jamie to her car and dumped the camera in her boot, before rejoining the snaking queue. It must have been a bad omen. By 8.20pm, 10 minutes before the concert was due to start, the stadium wasn’t even half full.

“How come?” we tried to rationalise. “Wasn’t there a blitz of advertisement by Hotlink?”

Jamie commented darkly, “Maybe she should have featured Mawi as the opening act. Or Siti Nurhaliza. She might have better luck attracting a bigger audience.”

We hooted with laughter, but inside, our heart was breaking. Oh Gwen.

When did I start liking her so much? Although I had found both her No Doubt songs and her solo efforts catchy, I had always thought of her as a Madonna Lite, up until a bus ride one month ago.

I had NO other song on my phone, and stuck in a jam, I had listened to it once, twice and thrice. By my fourth listening, it dawned on me, that 4 in the Morning wasn’t just a piece of infectious ear candy; it was a meticulously crafted piece of music.

It begins with a simple piano melody. Shimmering synthesisers that evoke the 80s nostalgia of Electric Dreams, and soaring violins coming together in an unholy symbiosis of sounds. A taut, hummable hook that would twist even the tongue of the glibbest gangsta rapper. The alliance of such wildly divergent sonic influences should clash, but in her mighty pipes, they don’t.

I snapped out of my reverie when Jamie grabbed my hand and pointed downstairs. “Look at the chairs they’re sitting on. Those are banquet chairs!”

Banquet chairs at a concert? How wild could a crowd possibly get on banquet chairs?

“And there I was, thinking I’d better wear sneakers to avoid getting trampled by the mob,” I said sarcastically.

Thankfully, by 8.30pm, the stadium began to fill up. It was an eclectic crowd. Anorexic types trying to show off non-existent boobs in plunging necklines. Tai-tais toddling in with their blinding bling. There was also an unusually high proportion of parents chaperoning their tweens, Jamie noted.

“Of course-lah,” I shot back. “Kid-friendly what. The fashion police have ensured that the concert is rated U.”

One thing for sure: this was an unmistakably Malaysian audience. They were airily waltzing in even at 9pm, toting their corn-in-a-cup and kacang putih.

“Only in Malaysia,” Jamie said wryly. “The star has to wait for the audience. No wonder Malaysia is not a major stopover for the international stars.”

And our self-appointed fashion police were not helping things. On the concert day, a Star report had said: Ahead of her arrival here for the Sweet Escape concert at the Putra Stadium tonight, there had been ripples of discontent and protests by some groups who felt that she would be a bad influence on young Malaysians with her dressing and stage act.

Half the audience was more under-dressed than her. Heck, in my tube top I was more scantily clad than dear Gwen. Tsk, tsk, would the police throw ME out ?

Noble intentions, heaving indignation, smart-ass remarks – they all disappeared in a blitzkrieg of roars when around 9.15pm, Gwen strutted out in all her candy-striped glory.

We gasped. She was even prettier in the flesh.

When the cameraman did a close-up, the fact hit us like a sugar rush. The flawless porcelain complexion was real. The fire-engine lipstick was real. The flaxen platinum hair was real. The prancing, blazing, fritzing live wire was real!

“I can’t believe she’s here!”

“I want to marry you!”

“Can I take you home?”

“Gwen, I love you!”

These rapturous superlatives were uttered by grown-up working women around me. Myself inclusive, ahem.

Gwen began with the titular track of her tour. The sound system wasn’t fantastic so we couldn’t hear her enunciation properly, but you know what? It didn’t matter. The audience was practically mouthing every single word.

As anyone with even the feeblest pulse on pop culture can tell you, high street fashion is synonymous with Gwen. Fashion police or no fashion police, she changed costume just two songs into the show.

Irrespective of what she wore, whether it was a sleeveless shell top and skirt with an oversized obi-belt that ties at the back, a horizontally striped collar T-shirt and track pants, dark blue smock over white leggings and stilettos or (possibly) a gunny sack, she looked mouth watering.

After the third song, she paused to speak to the audience. “Hello Malaysia! I feel so inspired today!” she began ebulliently.

She sang Winter, Danger Zone, Hollaback Girl and Orange County. My favourite songs. Songs I knew by heart. Songs I’d never heard in my life, and probably half the audience hadn’t either, but you know what? It didn’t matter.

The audience shrieked wildly when she leapt off stage and did a lap around the stadium for arguably her most recognisable song, Cool. Up in the RM125 plebeian seats, we could only gnash our teeth and froth at the mouth while the lucky audience in the RM200+ seats pumped her hand and ogled at their idol close up.

In the midst of cheering myself hoarse, I wondered if the rest of the audience was thinking what I was thinking:

“Our guys can learn a thing or two about professionalism from her.”

Gwen easily came up on top by merely being herself: just a girl, having a damn good time on stage, doing what she loved. Escape isn’t the only thing that’s sweet.

I finally decided that I should go to the airport to greet Gwen. Fyi, the last day, I nearly decided not to go cause my sister didnt let me go if I dont have friends to accompany me. Plus, I dont have any clue where the airport is, what kind of transport I should take to go there, I mean, really Im absolutely clueless!

With all the guts and love for Gwen, I decided to go all by myself and with this entire clueless thing.

I woke up at 6 oclock in the morning, then take a breakfast at 7 oclock, then walk to the train station at 7.30 am. (In Malaysia, sunrise starts at 7.30)

Finally, after asking here and there, I got arrive at the airport at 8 oclock. People looking at me cause Im wearing this this t shirt

Gwen Stefani Concert 2007 in Malaysia

It was 8.00PM when my sis & I reached there and the crowd was like "WOW!"!! 9,000 fans was lining up for as long as 20 metres just to get into the concert. The security was tight, unlike Wang Lee Hom(according to sis). No mineral water bottles and drinks allowed inside. We arrived late , so we planned to cut the queue. We saw Kah Ho and his gf, Kah Mun lining up.Such coincidence. So, we went up to them. Haha. We went in and we sat on different seats. Then we got hyped and we got down to the platform. We stood there & hyped among the crowd. It was AwESoMe!!!~ Gwen was FabULouS!~

The crowd was quiet in the beginning & went hyped after her 2nd song!

However, it was actually too short. It ended exactly at 11PM. Gwen Stefani RoCks!!! It was definitely worth the run in KL. haha.

Gwen Stefani In KL!!!!!

Gwen Stefani live here in Kuala Lumpur??? Unbelievable!!! A dream come truee!! Mussst watch no matter how expensive tickets are! As you can see from the ticket on top -_- the may paid by the way ^_^

The concert was suppose to start at 8.30,but they only let us in at 8.15pm -_-, well me and May were late,so we had to queue in this seriously long long line to get into the stadium, May was grumbling cause i won't let her cut line :P, but hey,at least we got in in time!

When we went for the Mariah Carey concert the last time, i thnk she only came out at...9.30pm? We waited for an hour and a half for her to show up! But for Gwen? 9 on the dot,she showed up on stage! Punctual!! (Me and May just reached out seats * It was so high up,we didn't dare look down*)

People were screaming and screaming (so did we) She was sooo pretty, looks exactly like how we always see her in magazines and on TV. Sigh... Anyways,she started of with Sweet Escape. Good Good song. We wanted to get up from out seat and dance, but we were afraid of heights. Our seats were seriously so high up and the stairs are so steep! Her Harajuku girls were there too. Man,they sure can dance!!

She sang all her hit songs,even from her previous album like Cool, Luxurious, Rich Girl, 4 in the Morning, Hollaback Girl, Wind it Up and some songs from the new album. Everyone was singing along to her songs. It was super super cool!

There was one point where she jumped off the stage and ran around to the back and climbed up some chair looking thingys and started to shake everyones hand!!! They went absolutely willld!!! Grrrrr, I'm so jealous!! I wanna shake her hand too!! Fume..

For her encore,she sang What You Waiting For. Really really good! Everyone knew it was her last song, we didn't care how high we were,everyone of us stood up and started screaming,shouting and dancing cause that was her last song. Beat was really really great! She's got a really good band and some bad ass dancers behind her. Oh yeah,I think one of the Harajuku dancers couldn't make it that one of the them was a Malaysian dancer ^_^ awesome!

There was one point when everyone left the stage and we thought the concert was over! Everyone was screaming for an encore! Chants of "We want more!" or "We want Gwen!" could be heard for 5 minutes. It was then she came out (dressed differently) and sang What You Waiting For. She didn't exactly change much. Most of the time a t-shirt and this suit looking thingy. Oh yeah, and she also wished us terima kasih and happy independence day! So sweet! She also added that she's almost a Malaysian cause her husband,Gavin Rossdale's mother is a malaysian!!! How cool is that!!!

We love Gwen Stefani!!! Please come back again soon!!! Malaysia loves you!!!!!

The very sweet escape concert ~ Malaysia ~
So, this is the whole Journey.

Starting from my house around 6,
we went by bus to Putrajaya sentral.
but since the next bus will be in another 15 minutes,
we decided to take taxi there.
Because we think that there will be no more merchandise left for us later.

Arriving there, we look for the crowd, it still far from the place where the taxi left us.

Gwen Stefani comes to Town
Gwen Stefani rocks!!! I was lucky enough to get tickets to watch her Sweet Escape 2007 tour at the Stadium Putra in Bukit Jalil… and with great seats too! Well, it’s not exactly VVIP, but at least I didn’t get blocked by any bobbing heads (especially with the crowd going wild; screaming and jumping around) and was able to get good pictures and videos of her performance!

The stadium was really packed, and Gwen really knows how to work up an audience… and she was also telling the crowd that she had a good home cooked meal with 40 of her Malaysian relatives. She’s practically family!!:)

WOOOhooo, YEEEEEHOOOOO!
"What an amazing time... What a family..
How did the years go by? Now it's only me.."

The opening act (the prison break gimmick), the dancers, the costume changes.

I love Gwen Stefani.

It was all I expected, maybe even more. The tickets Omar got for us were awesome. I was seated where the Xavier supporters were during Cheer 2007.. which is directly opposite the stage, at the other end of the stadium so I had a pretty damn good view of the whole stage. Of all the concerts I've been to, she's by far the friendliest!

There was a point where she jumped off the stage and raaaaaaaaan all the way to the other end of the stadium (flanked by security guards and her band members, rofl) and she clung to the railing.. WHERE MY BLOCK OF SEATS WERE!! I was a couple of rows behind the railing, and I didn't manage to run to it when she was there.. but I saw her face, in all it's platinum blonde glory!

I thought that was incredibly nice of her, and she even sang a whole song there... "Cool" to be exact. I was all smiles because before the concert started, Omar kept saying how he should have gotten the tickets at the side of the hall... but I guess not!!! :D

But anyway, there wasn't even an opening act! And it was only a half-hour delay, so when the lights were cut, the whole stadium went crazy. Two Harajuku girls dressed in stripes (prisoners, ala Sweet Escape video clip) were running around the stage.. So when I heard the beginning of Sweet Escape playing, I think I went nuts. So Gwen Stefani strolls in right, and I knew I was in for a good show.

She performed most of my favourite songs and that really really made me happy. :D Sweet Escape, Rich Girls, YUMMMYYYYYYYYYY! (when I heard the clockworks from the end of the song I went crazy and started whacking Omar), 4 in the Morning, Wind it UPPPP!, Luxurious, Cool, Hollaback Girl, I can go and on.. I downloaded the album prior to this, so I managed to "familiarise" myself with her new songs, and Now That You Got It and Don't Get It Twisted were my new favourites!

But anyway.. after Orange County Girl the concert was supposedly over.

But I knew that wasn't true, cos how can she not perform What You Waiting For?

So we waited.. and waited.. And no one left the stadium just yet.. So she finally came back on stage in a black cloak (?) and white tights and she sang a slow song (I can't seem to put my finger on which it was..) so when the lights were cut off, she ripped her cloak and was clad in leopard print so once I heard "What an amazing time... What a family.." I YELLED MY LUNGS OUT.

That was the song I was waiting for the whole night cos it's my Numero Uno favourite Gwen song. I was kinda hoping for Crash and Bubble Pop Electric, but there was no show.. I wasn't the least disappointed though. :)CONTINUE

Sweet Escape with Gwen Stefani
It was indeed a sweet escape as the five of us attended Gwen Stefani's concert in Bukit Jalil last night. Czar, Glorious Jade and her kids thronged the Putra Stadium and some of us had our bodies frisked as security was pretty tight. With the concert scheduled to start at 8.30pm, we found ourselves still waiting in line at that time and I was praying that they would only start when all of us got in.

Thankfully, we made our way in and sharp at 9pm, the concert started with the familiar music intro of "Sweet Escape". The audience and yours truly was in a frenzy state, I was in awe that I was seeing Gwen Stefani in person (though she had been here many many years ago while touring with No Doubt). Well, she made good on her promise about covering up; jackets and leggings but still very much the Gwen Stefani we have seen on TV! Stylish blond hair, beautiful face and a lovely figure (look at those muscular arms and slender legs - you can't tell that she had given birth just last year!). I felt like I was dreaming and only the screams of this girl beside me brought me back to reality! I enjoyed myself tremendously and the concert went by so fast; it was over by 10.30 after a two song encore. I'm back to dreaming now.....it was a great night of entertainment! Tuesday night, we drove to Kampung Komanwel and found ourselves some parking. Being seasoned concert goers from our Perth years, Panini and I decided that parking at the car park entrance would be far better than parking near the stadium entrance. Clever us! After the show we walked to our car and left just like that! While others stared at each other through their windshields in the deadlock that happened after the show.

Anyways, Ms Stefani (yes, now is the time to condescend to those who are't cognizant of Italian nomenclature and that it's pronounced "Steff-AHN-ee" and not "Stephanie"), after having presented herself in numerous press articles demurely clad with baby Kingston on her knee and hubby Gavin Rossdale by her side and promising to be decent onstage to god-knows-which anonymous stupid person who called for the banning of her concert, walked onstage and blew KL to bits with her down-to-the-basics-but-no-I'm-still-giving-it-my-all best!

We were up on our feet immediately. Seated but five rows away, we could almost hear her singing straight from the stage, which was a good thing, because from where we were, we could hardly hear her at all... (we were too close and between the columns of speakers hanging either side of the stage to get the full benefit of the apparently great sound - if you were seated halfway own the stadium). Still, I could see her armpits from where I was. And her eye make up, which, you know, she does herself.

The most fantastic thing about the Gwen is that you can feel her raw energy and her absolute passion for performing. Her chit chat was sincere and she made a point of acknowledging the audience in different parts of the stadium, even running to the back and performing on the ledge in front of the first level of seats. Those lucky buggers got to shake hands and take her photo up close.

Though Panini did spot a person who spent the whole evening watching the concert through their camera. Jeez, buy the dvd for god's sake, don't waste a RM200 ticket watching a tiny screen!! Don't people know what the point of going to a concert is anymore??

Ms Stefani and her Harajuku Girls, Love, Angel, Music and Baby, were lovely to watch perform, and I loved the choreography. And like, I tolly dig the music! Ska, reggae, punk, new wave... sometimes it sounded like late New Order songs, sometimes like rasta chill hop. It was extra special for me because Baby One was enjoying her first concert experience with our favourite female performer. Mama and Jobby were dancing like maniacs and screaming the lyrics while Baby One kind of shuffled along to the music in shyness. But at the end, she was singing the lyrics to songs we didn't know, and punching the air with abandon too.

All night we had been waiting for What You Waiting For? Because the remix had been used by Jobby for the curtain call of Enemy, it had extra special meaning for me! When she finally started with "What an amazing time, what a family, when did the years go by? Now it's only me..... TICK TOCK TICK TOCK TICK TOCK TICK TOCK!" We were jumping!! But I kept knocking the chair in front of me with my knees as I jumped. Concerts in Malaysia - no room to dance.

Before the concert I had been huffing about the idiots who caused alarm when they demanded her concert be cancelled. And I felt embarrassed that she spent so much time trying to calm those dumbos with promises to cover up more (she wore singlets under her corsets, an extra layer of tights, and I think skipped some of the more revealing costumes). It didn't matter a hoot, because she was so much larger than life. She was running across the stage, dancing, jumping, sweating, moshing on her lonesome... and you couldn't hear it in her voice at all. No breathlessness, no erratic notes as she ran while singing.

Though the lead up to the concert was an irritating display of righteousness and smallmindedness, the Malaysian people stepped up to the plate and gave her the audience she surely deserved. We were all screaming, dancing, ABANDONING ourselves to the spirit of her music without crossing over into evil or drinking blood. I was very proud of us that night, and we were very proud when she shared an anecdote proclaiming her own personal ties to Malaysia.

She wished us Happy Independence and several times squealed "Treema Kaseeeeee!" which everyone loved.

What really made me proud was when she put her fingers to her lips when she sang "It's my shh! It's my shh!" and everyone in the crown drowned her out singing "It's my SHIT! It's my SHIT!!!"

Well done, crew!!

I attended Gwen Stefani's concert performance on Tuesday night at Putra Indoor Stadium, Bukit Jalil. All i can said is that her performance is damn awesome...she looks so pretty onstage and her voice is just superb. Gwen definitely has the ability to turn straight girls into lesbians and gay guys into straight ones. All the girls are so crazy over her...shouting her name out loud non-stop throughout the whole performance. And yes, even the gay guys screamed just as loud as the girls...of course, i did shout very very loud too...until i nearly cracked my voice. OMGGGGGGG!!!!!! I just came back from the GWEN STEFANI concert at putra stadium, bukit jalil and I wanna shout out "GWEN YOU BLEW EVERYONE THERE AWAY"!!!! I have never felt soooooo HIGH in a concert for a long time. I haveta admit it was way better than avril lavigne in singapore. This was really a SWEET ESCAPE!!! AMAZING AND EXHILARATING PERFORMANCE. Gwen really got upclose and personal with her audiences. JUST LOVE the way she relates to her audiences. That's what I call a performer. OHH and about those student malay union or something who wanted to BAN this concert. KUALA LUMPUR: Gwen Stefani arrived here for her one-night concert with a message to her critics: “I am not a bad girl.”

“What they said about me is totally the opposite of what I believe in and how I see myself. I have a lot of respect for different cultures and religions. Plus, I’m a mother.

“Of course, I have certain moral values that I uphold. In America, they see me as a good role model,” said the former lead singer of No Doubt, who is now making waves as a solo singer.

Ahead of her arrival here for the Sweet Escape concert at the Putra Stadium tonight, there had been ripples of discontent and protests by some groups, who felt that she would be a bad influence on young Malaysians with her dressing and stage act.

Interviewed by Galaxie last night, however, she was donning a denim jacket, which covered a round-neck T-shirt. She was also wearing a long-flared white skirt.

The ensemble was from her LAMB collection which she personally designs.

However, she declined to be photographed, saying that she looked drab without her make-up and stage clothing.

“I’ve been in the music industry for 20 years and this is the first time that I’m facing opposition from people who have misunderstood me,” the 37-year-old American pop star said at her Shangri-la Hotel suit here.

Accompanying Gwen are her rocker husband Rossdale (of British group, Bush) and their 15-month-old son, Kingston, who she held in her arms during the interview.

It turned out that Gwen has got some Malaysian connection – Rossdale’s stepmother is Malaysian.

“I’ve made a lot of changes to my concert just for Malaysia. It’s a major sacrifice that I have made as an artiste. But I’m willing to do it ’cos I want my fans in this country to see me perform here.

“I will wear jackets over my tops and leotards underneath my skirts or dresses,” added Gwen, who had earlier privately met with Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry deputy secretary-general Datuk Mohammed Mohd Daud.

“I will not mess up. I’ve got all the guidelines in my e-mail and I’ve been reading them so much that they’ve been drilled into my mind,” she said.

Singer Gwen Stefani has vowed to put her singing career with No Doubt before any plans to expand her family.

The Don't Speak hitmakers have been on hiatus since 2003, although they recently announced plans to record a sixth studio album together - and Stefani insists she will record with the band imminently, despite the singer's motherhood and solo career causing tension between her fellow bandmates.

She says, "I love being pregnant and I want more children but I've unfinished business with No Doubt first."

Stefani gave birth to son Kingston last year, her first child with husband Gavin Rossdale.

Can a girl from Anaheim, California, bring the house down in these parts of the world? The answer is a hollering yes.

CRITICS of Gwen Stefani often say that she lacks identity; that her look and her music are just a blend of various other artistes’. They point to similarities between her and Madonna and Monroe. Some even point to the younger Fergie.

Superficially, such comparisons are perhaps understandable. But after watching her perform at Singapore Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, nothing could be further from the truth. Stefani has a distinctive style that sets her apart from the others. From her platinum blonde hair, to her quirky sense of fashion and her unique sound, Stefani displays an individuality that is exclusively hers.

No one can sing her songs (the American Idol contestants certainly proved that this season) or dress the way she does. And seeing her live affirmed this.

Stefani, a 37-year-old mother of one, is gorgeous. From the moment she appears on stage and despite the fact that you may be some distance away, that hits you.

Seeing her perform in Singapore a couple of years ago as part of No Doubt was no different. The crowd went wild when out of the darkness a slender silhouette with an unmistakable blond ponytail emerged.

But put aside her looks and her infectious tunes and the thing that is so appealing about Stefani is that she is a charmer. From the get go, she had the 8,500 strong crowd eating out of the palm of her hands this week.

“I still can’t believe that a girl from Anaheim, California, is here in Singapore,” she said.

“Thank you for giving me this wonderful life,” she said to the adoring fans. “I am going to be looking out for faces that inspire me.”

The Sweet Escape Tour, which follows the release of her second album of the same name, is all about having fun. Aptly titled, the one-night concert allows you to escape from your daily hassles and enter an unusual world where conformity is not expected.

With the help of her Harajuku girls, Stefani transformed what was supposed to be a performance into a party to which everybody was invited, and made to feel at home. The night began with her girls running through the aisles, attempting to evade the “cops” before launching into the opening number, The Sweet Escape.

For close to two hours, Stefani performed songs from her current album and first solo effort – Love, Angel, Music, Baby. It was interesting to hear her perform them all together as it highlighted the fact that despite having only two albums to her name, Stefani has a wide repertoire of songs.

Those familiar with No Doubt, however, might have been a tad disappointed, as she did not perform any hits by the group. But as the singer strives to establish her own identity, it is perhaps understandable that she chose not dig into the archives.

And maybe there was no need. Standing out among the crowd were a whole lot of young Gwen wannabes, identifiable by their unusual outfits, who are quite likely to be familiar with Stefani the solo artist. It could be the over-30s who were looking forward to hits like Don’t Speak and It’s My Life.

Nonetheless, it would have been a bonus as some of the more obscure numbers dampened the mood at times. Having said that, hits like Hollaback Girl, Wind It Up, 4 in the Morning, What You Waiting For? and Rich Girl really got the crowd going.

The concert established Stefani as a diva. Vocally, perhaps she may not be on par with the Mariahs or Christinas of the world. What she lacks in vocal prowess though is more than compensated for by a flamboyant performance style. Her concert is an experience and she responds to the audience with a sincerity that endears her to them.

She appeals to everyone. She is beautiful, yet there is an almost tomboyish and spontaneous side to her. This was certainly proven when, towards the end of the concert, Stefani moved to a stage in the centre of the stadium to allow all her fans to get a look. She then unexpectedly ran amidst the audience, making her way right through the back rows, allowing her fans to see her up close and make contact with her.

The concert, said her management, was about creating a party atmosphere. And Stefani wanted to interact with her audience, despite it being a nightmare for her security team. To her Singaporean fans, that was the climax of the show. After all, which international star actually comes down to the crowds?

Unfortunately, that is something that the Malaysian audience will not be able to experience. Recent protests by the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students have made the singer anxious about sticking to guidelines. And the rules state that an international artiste cannot interact with the audience.

Stefani also instructed her people to have a special briefing for the Malaysian media, explaining that she is aware of our customs, having already performed here with No Doubt in 1998 and that she intends to respect them.

Unlike Mariah Carey, who launched a silent protest, wearing jeans and a T-Shirt throughout her concert, Stefani has instructed changes to be made to her wardrobe for her show here and will wear a double layer of stockings, so that they would not appear transparent. She is a mother now and she wants to show that she’s respectful of others, we were told.

Wardrobe aside, it would be a shame for the Malaysian audience if she were to keep her distance during her concert in Kuala Lumpur.

Her Singapore concert was playful and harmless fun. In fact, judging by the many mothers and daughters who turned up together, it turned out to be a bonding experience. “There are so many young girls in the audience, I can’t believe it,” Stefani said. “I love being here in Singapore.”

Guess it’s up to us now to ensure that she feels the same love here.

The Sweet Escape Tour comes to Putra Indoor Stadium at Bukit Jalil, KL on Aug 21.

Gwen Stefani Can't Wait to Get Pregnant Again

Calling herself "a geeky Orange County girl, a chola girl, a rasta girl and an English girl – all mixed together," Gwen Stefani has no mixed feelings about one thing: producing a sibling for her 1-year-old son Kingston.

"Obviously I'm in a race to have another, but I don't want to do it while on tour," the singer, 37, tells InStyle for its September issue (on sale Friday). "But I can't wait to get pregnant again. It's so fun and consuming and romantic."

Being a mom already, she admits, means "I definitely don't get enough sleep, but I'd rather spend time with him. I've got this extra-fun, amazing, little guy who just wants to hang out with me."

Before she hits the stage while on tour, Stefani sings Kingston lullabies like "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" as he falls asleep. "But he sings a lot to himself," she says. "He's just getting into music. He does the whole head-bouncing thing."

Kingston's being musical should come as little surprise. His dad is Stefani's husband, rocker Gavin Rossdale. "I love him so much," Stefani says of Kingston. "He's the best thing that has ever happened to me."

Rossdale, she also says, is "super into being a dad." On his domestic prowess, Stefani says of her husband, "He's a creative cook. He makes whatever I crave, even when nothing seems to be left in the fridge."

And while Stefani may be in a rush to get pregnant again, there's another aspect to life she wishes to put the brakes on: raunch.

"Everyone's in such a rush to show they're sexy," she says. "Anyone can be sexy. We all have the same body parts. It's pretty boring. Life's not so short that you need to give it all away in five seconds. That was never my thing."

Escaping Sweetly

For some reason, few good live bands come through Hong Kong.

So when a concert does hit the town, sometimes you have to take what you can get.

Either way, I saw Gwen Stefani last night.

I'm not really a fan, but I had a good time.

If nothing else the girl is a performer.

Harajuku girls dressed as inner-city gang members, Rastafarians, and prisoners, danced alongside professional breakdancers and Gwen, who has all the smile and charm of a 30s Broadway star (with the endurance of an athlete).

I got a kick out of the Hong Kong crowd as well. So well behaved for a rock show. They were loving it, and when Gwen said she loved each and every one of them, they ate it up.

And so ruly. People actually stuck to their seats and did what they were told.

But then again, I usually go to shows like Tool and System of a Down.

Mmm. Yes. Mmm.

Gwen Stefani pays $2.395M for a 3,351-square-foot house in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park area

Singer Gwen Stefani has paid $2,395,000 to purchase a 3,351-square-foot house in Los Angeles’ Hancock Park area.

In a Big Time Listings exclusive, we can report on Stefani’s purchase of the home at 210 S. Citrus Avenue, which she made through her Von Trapp Trust and which closed on June 25. The purchase was recorded on July 5, according to public records.

Stefani’s use for the house is unclear, since we don’t for an instant expect this to be the singer-songwriter’s principal residence. We previously have written several times about Stefani’s real estate moves, which have included her paying $13,250,000 in August 2006 through her Von Trapp Trust to purchase a six-bedroom, 9,001-square-foot mansion at 11951 Crest Place in the gated Hollywood Hills community known as the Summit (which uses the Beverly Hills post office). And once she was settled into her new mansion, Stefani also sold her 4,926-square-foot house at 2566 Aberdeen Avenue in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood for $4,795,000 on March 27 to “That ‘70s Show” co-creator Mark Brazill, according to public records.

Now, Stefani has added another home to her real-estate portfolio. Built in 1926, the five-bedroom Hancock Park house has four baths and sits on a 0.15-acre parcel, according to public records.

This isn’t the first time that Stefani has owned Los Angeles-area property that she clearly doesn’t occupy. As we had noted on April 2, Stefani paid $350,000 in 1999 through her Von Trapp Trust for a two-bedroom, 1,160-square-foot house at 727 N. Gardner Street in Los Angeles’ Hollywood area that was built in 1923 and that she continues to own to this day, according to public records. And some other property purchases in Orange County have been made by a Jennifer Stefani that have shown the Gardner Street address as a home.

Gwen Stefani coming to town got the straitlaced all ruffled. Now that the customary noise is over and done with, fans can get ready to party.

IN a little over a week, Malaysia will play host to one of the hottest singers currently in the world ... Gwen Stefani. The stage is set for the American sensation to perform in Malaysia for the first time – in Kuala Lumpur, on Tuesday, Aug 21.

Thank goodness the storm in a teacup raised by a local students’ group has blown over. Not that its recent protest of the singer’s so-called “indecent dressing and obscenity” and call to the authorities to ban the concert has ever gained ground or threatened to spoil the party for music fans.

Nevertheless, Maxis Communications Bhd, the parent company of Hotlink, the concert’s presenter, has come out to assure that the show will go on with a promise from Stefani that she will abide by local guidelines, which include “no revealing costumes”.

All said and done, isn’t it great to have an international artiste of Stefani’s stature grace our shores (as part of her The Sweet Escape 2007 world tour, which includes gigs in North, Central and South America, Australasia, Asia and Europe)?

Now that the objection of the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students has been done with, some 9,000 Malaysians can look forward to partying to really cool music and a spectacular show at Putra Indoor Stadium in Bukit Jalil on that night (showtime: 8.30pm).

Gwen Stefani, entertainer extraordinaire, is a highly versatile and outstanding personality. The lady with the crimson lips is not just a singer but songwriter, fashion designer, fashion icon, wife, mother and occasional actress.

And, she can yodel too.

Stefani, who turns 38 in October, has done quite a bit in her 21 years in the entertainment industry. Reportedly having sold over 30 million albums worldwide (with the group No Doubt and as a solo artiste), the superstar has a string of hits that include Just a Girl, Spiderwebs, What You Waiting For?, Rich Girl (featuring Eve), Hollaback Girl, Cool, Wind It Up, The Sweet Escape (featuring Akon) and 4 in the Morning.

And without a doubt, she is going to do much more in the coming years.

Born in Fullerton, California, to an Italian-American father (Dennis Stefani) and Irish-Scottish mother (Patti Lynch), Stefani developed a passion for music at a very young age. The daughter of a Yamaha marketing executive and accountant-turned-homemaker, and the second of four children, participated in talent shows and school presentations, though people always told her that she had a weird voice. She does, actually, but uses it to her full advantage.

Apart from singing, Stefani’s other passion was fashion. She used to make some of her own clothes, and modify the ones she already had. Because of this, Stefani developed a keen eye for detail, and a unique (though some would say eccentric) sense of style that not only reflects her personality, but her talents and abilities too.

Stefani’s foray into the entertainment industry began in 1986 when her elder brother Eric invited her to sing in a ska band he was forming called No Doubt. The band released its debut eponymous album in 1992, right in the thick of the grunge revolution, when the airwaves were filled with grunge music and the sounds and styles of Britpop were fast on the rise in the United States. Not many were interested in ska then. (Eric, the keyboardist, later left the band to be an animator on the hit TV series The Simpsons.)

No Doubt’s second album, the self-released The Beacon Street Collection in 1995, also suffered the same fate, though it did get the band noticed by other musicians at the time. This encouraged No Doubt – which also comprised drummer Adrian Young, lead guitarist Tom Dumont and bassist Tony Kanal – to release its third album Tragic Kingdom within the same year.

Love. Marriage. Baby. Weight

All the while, Stefani and Kanal had been in a relationship, but as the romance started to sour, things got a little difficult for the band. No Doubt almost broke up, but instead of going on that road, Stefani turned the situation around and put all her energy and emotions onto paper. The result of that were several lyrically and musically powerful singles like Don’t Speak and Sunday Morning.

Tragic Kingdom went on to become one of the biggest selling albums worldwide at the time. The phenomenal success of Tragic Kingdom brought international fame to the band, more so for Stefani who unwittingly became the face of and unofficial spokesperson for the band (which is usually what happens when you’re the only girl in a band). Band members didn’t seem to mind, though, as they too get their 15 minutes of fame every now and then.

By the time No Doubt released its fourth album Return to Saturn in 2000, Stefani had already been seeing another singer for a number of years – Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale.

Stefani and Rossdale met when the latter had gone to a No Doubt concert and popped backstage to congratulate the band. From then on, Stefani and Rossdale, who is British, began a long-distance love affair that was kept a secret from the media and public for a long time.

In 2002, the couple got married at St Paul’s Church in Covent Garden, London. A second reception was held in Los Angeles, California, where Stefani wore a custom-designed John Galliano wedding dress that was trimmed with pink lace.

Stefani and Rossdale’s marriage and overall private life came under the spotlight when it was revealed that the latter had fathered an illegitimate daughter years ago from a model named Pearl Lowe. Though their relationship was tested, neither spoke publicly about it.

But that is essentially what Stefani is like. She may be well-known all over the world, and express her emotions and feelings through her songs, she usually keeps mum about her personal life.

In an interview with the singer in 2002, just months before her wedding to Rossdale, the singer only smiled whenever someone had asked her a question about wedding preparations or about her fiance. Even her No Doubt bandmates wouldn’t say anything about Stefani and Rossdale, or about their own personal lives for that matter.

Last year, Stefani and Rossdale welcomed their first child, Kingston James McGregor Rossdale, into the world on May 26. Stefani is more willing to talk about Kingston these days, though only in a way proud mothers do when talking about their offspring.

After giving birth to Kingston, Stefani was criticised by the media for losing her pregnancy weight too fast. The singer commented that she had lost her weight through proper diet and lots of exercise, but that she has always been insecure about her weight, especially since the fashion industry she is highly fond of practically glorifies the waif look.

In an interview with Elle earlier this year, Stefani said she had worked out with her trainer five days a week for three months to get back into shape.

Admitting to an obsession with her weight, she told the women’s magazine: “I was a little chubby when I was younger and I didn’t want to be that person forever. I’m extremely vain – I like wearing cute clothes. Clearly, I spend time thinking about it and it’s something I’ve had to deal with in my life. As I get older I try not to focus on it. It’s boring, it’s a waste of life.”

Still, to fans, Stefani has never really had much of a problem when it comes to her figure since she manages to maintain her taut body pretty well over the years.

Sweet sophomore

Currently, Stefani is on her world tour to promote her second and latest solo album, The Sweet Escape (there have been reports saying that No Doubt will start work on a new album once Stefani’s tour is done). The singer embarked on a solo career in 2004, when she released her debut, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. or L.A.M.B., which is also the name of her fashion brand.

Like her solo endeavours, Stefani’s fashion project has been well-received, garnering fans of all ages – though mostly female. To complement her new look and sound in 2004, Stefani employed four Japanese back-up dancers who are referred to as the Harajuku Girls. Stefani’s style by then had evolved from midriff-baring tees and cargo pants to chic schoolgirl outfits, thanks to the influence of Japanese street fashion.

This reinvention of Stefani turned her into a fashion icon who dares to take risks and not conform to popular beliefs. These days, Stefani’s eclectic style ranges from playful and sexy to classic and feminine, not unlike the leading ladies of Hollywood’s golden era.

In fact, Stefani even portrayed one of these leading ladies – Jean Harlow – in the multiple-award-winning Martin Scorsese film, The Aviator, in 2004

And last year, in yet another move to reinvent herself, Stefani started to wear necklaces with the motif of two back-to-back Gs on a diamond-encrusted key. The symbol has become synonymous with The Sweet Escape release.

With so many roles to take on, one does wonder where the platinum blonde gets all her energy and inspiration from. Based on previous interviews that I’ve had with the singer, it seems like she gets her drive to work and play hard from the support of friends and family. These days, however, Stefani names Kingston as the No.1 motivator in her life.

In fact, The Sweet Escape album is dedicated to her son. “I want him to grow up and look back and just know how important he is. He’s just the most delicious thing. I have no words for him.”

A fulfilled musician who revels in multiple genres – ska, pop, dance, rap and R&B – Stefani remarks: “For me, the music just brings a lot of confidence. Making music is very rewarding. It’s really fun to have people listen to your music and get something, whatever that is, out of it.”

Whatever it may be, though, there has never been any doubt that Stefani would come up tops in the many things that she does, and probably will do.

Singer Gwen Stefani isn’t insecure about her increased weight and feels she can carry it off, and even retain her popularity amongst audiences.

Singer Gwen Stefani has insisted that people will continue to like her even is she is ‘a bit fatter or not’.

Speaking to a newspaper, the 37-year-old mum told the newspaper that she tried not to be super-neurotic about her diet, and that like other girls, she likes to be fit.

“I try not to be but I’m super-neurotic about diet. I’m neurotic about trying not to be neurotic! I’m like every other girl. I have to try really hard my whole life to try to be fit. And I’m super-vain. And I want to wear cute clothes,” she has said.

“I was chubby when I was a little girl. And I have all those issues everyone else has. And I’ve learnt over the years that it’s such a waste of time. And people like me whether I’m a little bit fatter or not,” she added.

As regards to taking her son along on her tour, the No Doubt singer said that she doesn’t have to worry about his ‘school and stuff’.

“If I had to leave Kingston at home and not bring him with me everywhere then I wouldn’t do this. I know that’s not going to last, and he’s going to get more demanding and there will be school and stuff. But for now I get to do it all,” she added.

THE organisers of the upcoming Gwen Stefani concert in Kuala Lumpur recently came up with the nifty idea of having a troop dressed up a la Harajuku Girls – the singer’s signature back-up quartet – to go round various entertainment outlets in the Klang Valley to hype up the event.

Since July 19, the gals in their unmistakably bright outfits have been carrying out their roles as the ambassadors of the show’s main sponsor, the leading prepaid brand Hotlink under Maxis Communications Bhd.

Among the venues they were seen at were the Curve in Petaling Jaya, and Jalan P. Ramlee and Asian Heritage Row in Kuala Lumpur.

The original Harajuku Girls – three Japanese and one Japanese- American – are an eye-catching outfit that began as Stefani’s backup dancers three years ago.

Harajuku is an area in Tokyo, Japan, that’s famous for youth (and quite often, bizarre) fashion. The group is a reflection of Stefani’s taste for Tokyo street fashion, though detractors have accused the star of perpetuating the negative stereotypes of Asian females.

Coming back to the Malaysian “Harajuku Girls”, the group also executed special dance performances at selected places while offering for sale the tickets to The Sweet Escape 2007 concert and Hotlink top-ups to the public.

Patrons who had spent RM300 and above at selected entertainment outlets also won tickets to the concert. Hotlink users and Maxis One Club members also enjoyed a 10% discount on concert tickets (this deal, however, is applicable to only Hotlink users now).

The highlight of the promotion is the Gwen Stefani contest for Hotlink customers of which the winners will get a rare chance to meet and greet the glam dame herself! (Details of the contest available on www.hotlink.com.my )

Queen B-girl Gwen stefani brings a storm of ska to Bangkok later this month

Sexy ska princess Gwen Stefani is keeping busy with a year-long world tour to promote her latest album "The Sweet Escape". This month she'll be able to satisfy her fascination for colourful Asian culture with her solo debuts in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

It isn't the first time Bangkok has seen Stefani live. Her original visit was in 2003 with ska band No Doubt. This time round BEC Tero Entertainment have spent Bt40 million for the high-tech show on August 19 at Impact Arena in Muang Thong Thani. The 90-minute performance will include a light and video show and three big screens, the main one a 48-square-metre giant.

Trailing in the singer's wake will be a 30-strong entourage comprising hairstylists, trainers, wardrobe assistants, security, personal assistants, technicians, management and, of course, her six band members and eight dancers.

Before discovering her talent for music, Stefani was looking forward to a life of marriage, children and white picket fences. But an introduction to ska from her brother started a love affair that eventually led her to stardom, with millions of her records selling worldwide and doors opening to the worlds of film and fashion.

Born and raised in Fullerton, California, Stefani was 17 when she joined her brother Eric Stefani's band No Doubt as lead singer. After an unsuccessful debut and a self-financed follow-up, their third album, "Tragic Kingdom", arrived in 1995. Gwen Stefani wrote most of the songs - tales of her heartbreaks and rebirth. Tracks like "Don't Speak", "Just a Girl" and "Spiderwebs", along with her energetic moves and funky streetwear, earned Gwen Stefani her "Ska Princess" title.

After two more albums - "Return of Saturn" (2000) and "Rock Steady" (2001) - the band took a break leaving Stefani to pursue her solo career. Stressing that No Doubt was still a unit, her solo debut "Love. Angel. Music. Baby" came out in 2004 with a lot of help from long-time band mate Tony Kanal and high-profile collaborators like the Neptunes, Dr Dre, Andre 3000, Nellee Hooper, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The result was the Prince and Madonna inspired album with a string of hits that included "Hollaback Girl", "Cool" and "What You Waiting For?"

Outside of music, Stefani has taken big strides, as the designer of her LAMB line of clothing and as an actress, with a cameo appearance in Scorsese's "Aviator" alongside Leonardo di Caprio.

A mother of one with British rock star husband Gavin Rossdale, Stefani's music career is still going strong. "The Sweet Escape" - also Neptunes-produced - is her second solo album, "Wind It Up" the name of the first single.

Right now, Stefani and her band are performing in Australia. But those iconic red lips and stunning blonde hair will be reigning supreme in Bangkok soon.

On the eve of her world tour last month, Stefani paused long enough for a phone call and a chat with Weekend about her plans and her life.

Where are you now and what are you up to?

Right now we're in LA, actually packing to go to Mexico tomorrow to start the international tour. We just did over 40 shows in America, which were unbelievable, really unbelievable, so much fun and it just went by so fast. It's almost sad how quickly it went by. And now we're about ready to go out and do this international tour, which is really hard to believe - I have fans that don't speak English, that listen to my records and support me around the world. It is gonna be so amazing to be able to go and see them. The reality of that is going to be so rewarding, especially Thailand, which me and my husband [Gavin Rossdale] are huge fans of, so we're really looking forward to coming.

What will the show be like?

Basically it's in the spirit of these two albums ["Love. Angel. Music. Baby" and 'The Sweet Escape"]. The records are just supposed to be fun dance records. So we have me plus four Harajuku girls and four b-boys dancing. I have a whole live band, which is incredible. Gail Ann Dorsey who plays with David Bowie is playing bass; I've got both of the horn players from No Doubt with me; and we have Zachery Alford from the B-52's. He played with Bowie as well. The whole band is incredible, they could just be up there on their own. So it's going to be a lot of fun, lots of costume changes and dancing. Nothing to be taken too seriously.

Will you be wearing the clothes from your line on stage?

The clothes that are on stage are basically designed by me and Andrea Lieberman, who works with me for LAMB. It's basically haute couture custom things; they're like one-of-a-kind pieces that we created just for the show.

Is the third album out soon?

No, I won't be doing another solo record as far as I know. Right now I'm planning to go back and do another No Doubt record after this. I was only ever intending to do one record, and it turned into two. I want to have another baby and I can't tell how long a record will take. We definitely want to do it as soon as we can. And as soon as I get back from touring, get recharged, hang out with my husband a little bit, then I'll just start writing. And you never know, it could come really fast or it could take a long time, so we'll do it as quick as we can.

Do you think the experiences you've had as a solo artist have changed you as a person, and as the singer of No Doubt when you return?

Well, I'm hoping that the experiences I had song writing outside of No Doubt will make me a better songwriter. The separation from them after being best friends and being in a band together nearly half of my life definitely inspired us. We definitely miss each other, we don't take each other for granted. And everyone is just inspired to do a record together again. I think that after you're together for that many years, it's a healthy break that we had. I think it's really exciting now whereas before I was just really inspired to do a certain kind of record. It wasn't that I wanted to be away from No Doubt, but I wanted to make a certain kind of music, a lot of it programmed dance music. And I did it, and it was really amazing and fun. And there's something I could never get that I get with No Doubt. We have chemistry that you can't get anywhere else.

So what are the guys from No Doubt doing now?

They're really just all doing their own projects. Tony [Kanal, bassist] worked a lot with me on both these albums. The current single, "4 in the Morning", is a song I wrote with Tony. Adrian [Young, Drummer] is producing, writing, doing a lot of golfing. He has a family and also is doing a lot of studio work playing drums, and touring with Bow Wow Wow. Tom [Dumont, guitarist] produces. He also had a baby. So everybody's been keeping pretty busy. Now, actually, they're in the studio working on No Doubt music, and preparing. When I get back from touring, I can hear what they did and hopefully they can turn into songs.

Would you collaborate with Gavin, your husband?

We actually did play together with No Doubt one time. We did a U2 song together, "The Sweetest Thing". But he is currently about ready to release another album, a solo record that he's been working on. I've sung some background vocals for him and things like that, but I don't know why we've never written together. He's does it all himself - not really a collaborator.

Do you get feedback from him about your work?

Of course I do! Every time I write a new song, I'm like, "can I play it for you?" It's different, he doesn't do that as much but he tells me what he thinks, and the same with the shows. He definitely comes down and gives me his opinion on things. That's one thing that's fun about being with someone who does the same thing as you - we can help each other.

This time both Gavin and your son Kingston will be coming to Thailand with you. Any plans for a family hang-out?

I know we are going to be enjoying some incredible meals. Even on the American tour I would take Kingston everywhere on my days off. We were going to the aquarium or to the park or to the zoo or different places like that. So I would love to take Kingston somewhere that he would enjoy in Thailand. But I don't know exactly where yet. I have to do my research. It's sad about touring, you know? You never have enough time in the places you go; you're always in a rush to go to the next place. I wanted to just come to Thailand last year. I was pregnant and I wanted to come but it was going to be too long of a flight, and I ended up staying home. But I want to come here one time and just not work and just shop, and really get to know the place.

Anything to say to your fans here?

I want to say that I am so excited and honoured to come back and play again and I can promise you that you are going to have fun at the show - because it's a fun show!

Hello all.

I am writing from a recording studio were we are working on new No Doubt material. As many of you know, Gwen played a couple of shows in Irvine, California in June. As a surprise, No Doubt played the encores which were unannounced. What a great experience!! We all really had a blast, and on a personal note, I felt more of an energy rush than I had on stage in many years. The audience was crazy. They were louder than I can remember for a regular No Doubt show.

I think we were all feeling that this could be a fun idea independently from each other. Of course it only took one of us to throw the idea out and then it was on. Playing briefly together again was truly epic.

Can't wait to get back on the horse.

Gwen Stefani recently admitted to U.K. newspaper The Observer that meeting up with her No Doubt bandmates was a bit uncomfortable.

"It would be ridiculous to say there was no tension," she said. "Because my solo career has been going on and on. It was never supposed to be this long."

The Spice Girls might have once owned girl power but the real G power is now firmly in the hands of Gwen Stefani.

While fashion and style are a hallmark of Stefani’s video and merchandising world, this was definitely not a case of style over substance. She’s got both firmly in hand.

As a golden cage rolled onto the stage The Sweet Escape began with Stefani dressed in sequined black and white hot pants while the eight dancers – four Japanese girls and four urban males – were jailbirds.

She’d barely started the song and the mainly female17,000-strong crowd were already in Stefani’s hand and spent the next 90 minutes right there with her.

While the up-tempo hip-hop jumpers were what got the crowd bouncing along, it was the ballads that actually showed off Stefani’s voice and song writing prowess.

THE crowd went wild last night at Gwen Stefani's concert in Perth, as she moved through the rows to serenade her fans.

There’s something to admire about Gwen Stefani. She has a quirky but rather limited voice, she’s not a classic beauty (although she sure scrubs up well), and her recordings are a chart directed and safe mix at the pop end of dance music, but the super fit blonde has a way of presenting herself that shows she’s much more than the sum of her parts.

In front of 17,000 screaming (boy, were they screaming) fans at the Burswood Dome, Stefani and her crack band, featuring Gail Ann Dorsey and drummer Zack Alford, delivered a 100 minute set filled with hits and at least half a dozen costume changes.

Ignoring the ska-punk roots of her No Doubt past (not to mention their hits like Don’t Speak and Just A Girl), she collected songs from her two platinum solo albums and offered them as celebrations of life, love and simply having a good time. The arrangements were lean and powerful, particularly when the trumpet and trombone horn section had the chance to punctuate the sweet pop. While all the costumes were very glamorous there was an agreeable grit in the playing that suggested the material was being heard in the best possible light.

The Sweet Escape opened. Its attendant call of woohoo was taken up by the crowd and it set the tone for the night. Emerging from a cell and wearing prison issue hot pants Stefani showed off her great legs while moving around the stage with her team of dancers. She looked good, they moved good, there was something for everyone. All her hits were given an airing, including Rich Girl, Wind It Up – whoever thought The Sound Of Music would find its way back up the charts after all these years?, Hollaback Girl, What You Waiting For, but the most touching moment came with a gentle reading of The Real Thing, which was dedicated to her son Kingston.

During Orange County Girl Stefani gave each of the dancers a chance to shine individually, and they did so in a series of impressive breakdance spins. Egged on to join in by her troupe, Stefani eventually ran across the stage and did a cartwheel. There was much laughing all round, and Stefani looked to be leading it.

What she is good, no make that great, at is involving the crowd. She may not be a great dancer but the girl sure can run. Towards the end of the set she sprinted from the stage to the mixing desk in front of the bleachers at the far end of the room. She then proceeded to move through the back rows, stopping to sing a bit, talk a bit and honestly get up close and personal with her fans. She was tailed by a huge security person who was struggling to keep up, but it didn’t matter because you could see no harm was going to come to her.

Such a simple gesture of singing in the midst of the people in the worst seats in the house made true all the words about how much she loves her fans. Lots of people say it, but not many go to those lengths to show it. She was touched, hugged but never impeded as she made her way around the room and shared the love.

Even before the concert began it was the best night of my life.

First off I saw Kara who looked AMAZING(!) and I went and talked to her and she said she met Gwen twice which was (for me) unbelievable. And then David, Ali and Danni arrived later and I met them, they're all awesomee and so glad I met them. Remedy came out into the audience and although I was a little scared to go up to him I did and got my tour book signed by him. He was really nice :]

After that we were watching Gym Class Heroes and during that Kara came up to me and my friend and gave us these SICK AS guitar pics... I'm in love with her now. x'D She just made the night so much better.. for me who doesn't go to concerts much and loves Gwen and have been waiting for this for a long time, it was just... YAY :) So yeah, anyway GCH's were alright I'm not really into them though.

This nazi who was working kept clearing the area around us (I was front row, but yeah.. there was space in front, sorta diagonal) and Kara talked to us and said this *** lady was complaining because her "kid couldn't see" but we're all like.. Umm don't buy front row tix then :] And as if you're not going to sit.. during Gwen Stefani. : FREAKS!

Also during GCH's Flea and Remedy came out, but Danni told us no Harajuku Girls had come out before the show, and one did!! So that was exciting, and unbelievably.. Gwen came out.. WITH KINGSTON :0 I spotted her, then everyone else did and started screaming so she left... Gwen came on around 8.30 and she was just fantasticccccccc loved every song.. sung along to everything.. :] If I had to pick 3 favs.. they'd be Wind it Up, Wonderful Life and The Real Thing. But I enjoyed everything.. it was an awesome night.

I got a Tee and a Tour Book... not too much but yeah. It was just great :D

GWEN Stefani is the closest star you'll ever find to a living version of children's character Alice in Wonderland.

She's kooky, fun and above all else, incredibly sweet.

Yet lying beneath the innocence and long eyelashes she batts so well, Stefani is a tough chick.

Not only that, but the style and music icon has an amazing talent for transforming a typical pop concert into a full-blown theatre show complete with moving sets and a cast of fun-loving, mischevious characters.

Her passion for magic and children's songs (think Lonely Goatherd in Wind It Up) has set Stefani apart from the thousands of other strong female artists currently touring the pop circuit.

In the past six months Australia has experienced the legacy of Christina Aguilera, Beyonce Knowles, Pink and Kylie Minogue – just to name a few. Yet Stefani has something extra special that makes jaws drop, and her performance memorable.

Those who know her from her former glory days as the frontwoman of 90's pop band No Doubt would've been surprised to see their rock girl do glamour princess. However, she didn't disappoint either fan base at her sold out Entertainment Centre show last night, as she strutted around the stage with confidence and a set of rock hard abs to boot.

Stefani played every bit the star in her very own fairytale. Creating her own magical world on stage, the pint-sized platinum blonde bombshell appeared to be having just as much fun as her devoted crowd.

Her costumes were elaborate, but not too showy or overdone, demonstrating the Orange County girl knows where to draw the line between gimmicks and just plain tacky. She let her talent and imagination show as she reeled off hit after hit, all with a pesky cold that's kept her reasonably low profile while she has been Down Under.

She opened the concert with one of her back-up dancers – who she has affectionately dubbed Harajuku girls because of their Asian origin – roaming the crowd playing an escaped criminal.

Quick action by the police and the girl is detained, and thrown in a moveable jail cell with Stefani, to which she launched into recent chart-topper, The Sweet Escape.

She played most of the tracks off her current album, also titled The Sweet Escape, including the quirky song about donuts, Yummy, and most recent single, 4 In The Morning.

The second track of the show was Rich Girl off her first album, Love. Angel. Music. Baby. which kept the rowdy audience on their feet.

Althought the days of young-girl angst and pink punk hair are clearly long gone, Stefani brings to the stage two decades of experience and showmanship. Competing for fans against girls half her age (Stefani is 37), she has no shame in showing off her assets – her diverse vocal range, and her ability to transform theatre into a pop concert.

The high energy, pop tracks including Hollaback Girl, Wind It Up and show-closer What You Waiting For spurt funky beats, while her ballads – and there are many – showcase a powerful and well trained voice.

Stefani proved she really is Cool when she ran through the crowd, much to the distress of her high level security network.

The new mum clearly has no reservations when ensuring she keeps her tight-knit fan base in time for the release of her third solo album, which she tells us will be later this year.

kara.little.lamb -My Sweet Escape Tour Story/ Pics :)
ok, so this is the longest post ever!

So on the 31st July i flew to Melbourne at 1pm.
Stayed at my mums friends house in melbourne, which was great :)

WEDNESDAY 1ST OF AUGUST

Caught 3 types of transport to the airport, which was so confusing! got there at around 10.30 am. ali and her friend flew in from sydney at around 12 i think, so we met up and waited at the gates where gwen would come out if she was on the next flight/s.
we met a paparazzi guy who was really nice :)
a couple of hours went past, and the herald sun photographer came and knew she was on the next flight arriving at 2.30 so i started freakin out and ali and her friend dani were getting really annoyed at me lol

so the band walks out one by one and i was syaing hi warren, hi stephen etc and they waved, but we stayed put because we were there for gwwen obviously. so we saw curtis and i was like in shock!!! when my eyes first saw gwen i was gobsmacked, she was so cute and small and i was just thinking oh my god she looks so different, i couldn't believe my eyes, she acknowledged us and then mikey her personal trainer said to follow them through the airport to get pics and stuff signed. so we walked behind her and i couldnt stop saying omg she is so cute and i cnt believe shes real! (sounds stupid i know)

so ali got her stuff signed and i got my original BSC signed and then mikey asked if my camera was the one which we would be taking the pic with, so he took the camera and we jumped in :)
then two randoms had a photo and then the paparazzi wanted anpother one of us (the ones that were on ndweb etc)

I love how I couldn't believe people would wait around multiple hours to see her and then me and my friend just did at the airport. She was so nice and stopped and signed stuff and took photos with most people even though it was raining and way late for Kingston to be up and in the cold. This ebay jerk pushed in front of the last girl though. .

There were a couple of us from the forum there. It was really fun meeting up with forumers and it didn't feel like such a long wait.

We got there about 9:30 am and her plane was like 7:00 pm

But the Gym Class Heros were like 1pm and the dancers were about 4 so there was lots of opportunity to meet everyone.

The singer, 37, says she never misses an episode – and tunes into the show via the internet or gets someone to tape it. 'I love it,' Gwen tells The Sun. OMG Tonight's show in Adelaide was AMAZING!! She was saying how the Brisbane show was the best show so far and for Adelaide to beat Brisbane. The crowd went nuts, as did I! Just before Wonderful Life Gwen saw Kara (SO happy for her!!) and asked how many shows she had been too and Kara gave Gwen the photo of her meeting Gwen, and showed to the audience! Then straight after that (she saw me during Luxurious and pointed) she came right to where I was and pointed at me during the soeech and I went nuts and I stood on the chair and she said "weren't you at the airport?" and I was going nuts and people were cheering for me and I was shouting "YES!!!" and like I said in the topic about meeting Gwen, I was in the background of the photo of her at the airport and Gwen said "I saw you in the paper" and said all this other stuff to me which I can't even remember because I was about to have a breakdown! She then grabbed the towel she wiped herself with and was aiming to me and pointing at me and threw it, but it just fell and some girl in the front row caught and ran out the audience with it, and Gwen noticed and still pointed at me and said "I dedicate this next song to you!" and you guys will NEVER believe what song it was!! :o

WONDERFUL LIFE!! As you know I made a music video to my favourite Gwen song for school and I took it with me to the airport when I met her, but I didn't want her to have to carry the DVD around because she was so busy signing away, but the fact that she dedicated it to me, I just cannot believe it!!

It's past midnight now and I am SO tired but I promise I'll scan the newspaper article (WHICH GWEN SAW!!) tomorrow for you guys!!

Gwen spots a familiar fan
During Sunday night's amazing Gwen Stefani show at the Entertainment Centre, Gwen spotted a familiar face in the crowd.

"I recognise you," she said.

"You were at the airport – did you see your photo was in the paper?"

Gwen also fessed up to the crowd that she was struggling with a head cold, and that she was having an issue with "boogers".

The former No Doubt singer also paid a touching tribute to her son with rocker Gavin Rossdale.

"This is a tribute to the King," she said, referring to son Kingston James McGregor Rossdale.

Went to the airport yesterday from 7am and Gwen arrived at 4pm! It was so worth the wait! I got my L.A.M.B. album signed and I thanked her for coming to Adelaide and she said "Aaaww, thank you SO much". I also asked for a photo and she was like "Sure!" and I was NOT expecting her to say that as there were SO many people there wanting autographs! :o

She was SO friendly though and in the I put my arm around her waist, so I touched her too! So cannot wait for tonight's show! I also got to meet kara.little.lamb (who was so awesome and looked freaking wild in her lamb gear!) and a few other awesome people!

What makes Gwen Stefani a style icon? It’s all in the mix! “She’s a little punk, a little Hollywood glamour; she’s a little bit of a reggae girl. And she’s a tomboy,” says her stylist and secret weapon Andrea Lieberman, who began working with Stefani on the “Let Me Blow Ya Mind” video. For The Sweet Escape tour, Lieberman and Stefani “were in a very ’50s sensibility” that “spanned the globe.” They took inspiration from Elvis and his “Jailhouse Rock” phase as well as ’50s London. “That’s where all the shirts and the ties came from,” Lieberman tells us. “A lot of the hairstyles are a very rockabilly.” At the same time they moved past the Harajuku Girls phase into something “more grown up. We never did a more traditional Japanese thing and we sort of wanted to go there with ‘4 In The Morning.” But if you want to steal Gwen’s look, you just have to hit your local mall. “It’s all out there. It’s just a matter of how you put it together,” she says. For example, “we got our skinny ties from Urban Outfitters.”

She might be wearing her sparkly leotard-cum-dungarees ensemble. Or a pair of sequined red hot pants. Or a tartan schoolgirl's uniform. Maybe she'll have slipped into one of her favourite outfits: armpit-length black leather gloves and monochrome horizontal stripes (imagine an escaped convict hiding out in a burlesque joint).
If you're reading this on Sunday morning Gwen Renée Stefani will be on stage in Australia, performing her idiosyncratic version of disco funk in front of thousands of tweens, teens and twentysomething pop fans in the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. For 90 sweaty minutes there will be no let-up in the costume changes, choreography - part Broadway show, part cheerleader rally, part hip hop face-off - and belting pop songs.

The ex-No Doubt frontwoman-turned-solo star is midway through a world tour. So far, Stefani has completed a run of 15,000-seater arenas in North America, Central America, South America and New Zealand. Next week teamStefani - six musicians, a squad of female dancers known as the Harajuku Girls, and a bunch of male breakdancers - move into the Far East and then Europe.
Finally, towards the end of October, following a final bow on the stage of Prague's Sazka Arena, Gwen Stefani returns home. The only question then will be which home: the Los Angeles mansion or the huge townhouse that she and Gavin Rossdale, the British singer and guitarist, keep in the north London celebrity enclave, Primrose Hill?

The Sweet Escape Tour 2007 would be tough on a bunch of fresh-faced lads with guitars. Imagine how hard-going it must be on a 37-year-old multi-tasking pop singer, fashion designer and first-time mother who, when I met her in London before the tour's launch, was still breast-feeding her son Kingston, born in May 2006.

'I don't know when I'm going to stop breast-feeding,' Stefani chirps as she motors into the hotel suite, fresh from another feed. 'I'll just keep going while I can - like, he's getting his teeth so it is a little bit scary. He's bitten me a few times!'

Gwen Stefani doesn't do anything by half. Breast-feeding, she gushes, 'is just obviously really convenient with my lifestyle'. Baby Kingston was 'genius' on the flight from Los Angeles to London. 'He nursed then went to sleep. But he doesn't sleep through the night,' she says brightly. 'He's up every three hours to feed.'

Nonetheless, today Stefani looks as glamorous as ever. The colour scheme is black and white: vertiginous YSL heels, skintight Balenciaga trousers, Azzedine Alaïa sweater, crisp shirt ('I can't remember the designer') and chunky, diamond-encrusted pendant.

I could put her speedy chat down to sleep deprivation and jetlag. But I've met her before and she chewed my ear off then, too. Imagine a torrent of Valley Girl and not much regard for punctuation. But don't be fooled by the ditsy blonde you might have seen dolled up as Alice in Wonderland and goofing through lavish videos like the one for her Grammy-nominated 'What You Waiting For?' single. On her own and with No Doubt, the Orange County band that California-born Stefani joined when she was 17, she's sold 30 million albums. That includes seven million copies of her solo debut from 2004, Love.Angel.Music.Baby. It featured four top-10 hits and won her the 2005 Brit Award for Best International Female.

Just 13 weeks after giving birth, she hired Keane songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley, producer Pharrell Williams, Depeche Mode legend Martyn Gore and released her second solo album The Sweet Escape. Even her acting debut was in an epic, playing Jean Harlow in The Aviator, Martin Scorsese's biopic of Howard Hughes. 'I'm vain enough to want do a movie again,' she admits, but right now more roles 'are the last thing on my list'. There's too much else going on.

The initials of her first album gave her the name for her fashion label, L.A.M.B. When the line debuted on the New York catwalk in Fashion Week of September 2005, Stefani described it as 'a little bit Sound of Music. A little bit of Orange County. A little bit of the Rastafarian rasta girls. A little bit English Great Gatsby garden-party girls. Pretty much the same thing I always do, but different versions of it.'

A Gwen Stefani fashion label made brilliant business sense. She's become one of those pop stars whose innate style - a sort of streetwise haute couture - means that she wields influence beyond the stage. Women watch what she puts on the morning in the same way as they do with Madonna or Kylie.

'I think Gwen is the ultimate 21st-century pin up,' says Stefan Lindemann of Grazia magazine, which features Stefani time and time again. 'She's modern-retro - she plays on the pin-up thing with her vintage aesthetic, but she's also ultra-modern. Like her music, her style is sexy but also out there - eclectic, almost aggressive. She's no victim, and certainly no fashion victim. With someone like Victoria Beckham, you can see that a stylist has decided what she's going to wear and put it together piece by piece, but Gwen's style always seems organic.'

Sales of her label in the smarter department stores of New York, London and Tokyo have been healthy and Nicole Kidman and Teri Hatcher are fans. However there was a hiccup earlier this year when Stefani's designer, Zaldy, left her to concentrate on his own lines, notably for Scissor Sisters.

'It was unfortunate timing,' she says. 'I was like, "Don't just plop this on me!" Now it's just me and my stylist doing the Spring 08 collection. But I'd love to have a bigger design team. Someone like Marc Jacobs, I wonder how many people are working there, just feeding him ideas, feeding feeding feeding ... I have, like, maybe five people in my entire team. I'm very hands on with it, but it's got to change, I've got to get more people.'

She does if L.A.M.B. keeps expanding. She's recently moved into handbags and launched a diffusion line, Harajuku Lovers. And what celebrity franchise is complete without a perfume? Her latest venture is a bespoke scent called L. 'I would never have done a fragrance as ce-leb-ri-tee ...' she maintains, tapping the syllables out on her tongue, 'just to do one for the sake of it. But because I have L.A.M.B. it's really the most milestone, prestigious kinda moment. Basically, you have an inspiration of a perfume that you like, whether it's a flower or a certain direction.'

Gwen Stefani's first stage appearance was at a school talent show, wearing a self-made copy of the drop-waist tweed dress that Maria wore while singing 'I Have Confidence' in The Sound Of Music. She grew up with three siblings in a comfortable middle-class household in southern California. Her father worked in marketing for Yamaha motorbikes. Her housewife mother was a seamstress, and teenage Gwen made her own clothes, too.

'My parents always pushed creativity on us, but they made it seem like the fun thing to do. '

Aged 17, at her older brother Eric's invitation, she became the singer in his ska-flavoured new band. No Doubt was influenced by Madness and the Selector, British bands who were curiously popular in California in the early Eighties. No Doubt released their first album in 1992 but it wasn't until their third, 1995's Tragic Kingdom - which featured the huge single 'Don't Speak' - that they found success. The two-and-a-half year-long tour that came next put paid to Stefani's college career. Tragic Kingdom sold a staggering 16 million copies and launched the frontwoman into the rock and pop stratosphere.

But 20 years since starting out in music, and a decade on from her arrival on the world stage, there's another facet to Stefani's appeal: women identify with her. She's a pop goddess with a deluxe lifestyle but who experiences the traumas other women suffer too. For an A-list star she's remarkably candid. 'I try not to be but I'm super-neurotic about diet,' she says. 'I'm neurotic about trying not to be neurotic! I'm like every other girl. I have to try really hard my whole life to try to be fit. And I'm super-vain. And I want to wear cute clothes. You know, I was chubby when I was a little girl. And I have all those issues everyone else has. But I try not to. And I've learnt over the years that it's such a waste of time. And people like me whether I'm a little bit fatter or not.'

Her personal life has had its fair share of dark moments too. For seven years she dated Tony Kanal, the bass player in No Doubt. Their break-up was traumatic, although it did inspire Stefani to co-write the best-selling 'Don't Speak'.

In 1995 she met Gavin Rossdale, then the singer with Bush, when the two bands toured together. In 2003 they were married, twice: in London and again in LA. But the relationship was, as the tabloids say, 'rocked' the following year by the discovery that Rossdale was the real father of the model Daisy Lowe. She's the teenage daughter of Pearl Lowe, the singer, best friend of Kate Moss and partner of Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey. Until then Rossdale, an old friend of Pearl Lowe, had thought he was only Pearl's godfather. The gossip magazines had a field day with the news, reporting that the upset had caused ructions between the newlyweds.

How, I wonder, does she and Rossdale's relationship work these days, what with so much going on in their lives (he's also just embarked on a solo career, after the failure of his post-Bush band Institute)?

'I don't know,' Stefani sighs. 'It's one of those mad love affairs that you can't live with and you can't live without, and you just keep going and going.' Her smile is wide now. 'And time goes by and you get the rocky times then you get the intense love times, then you get the reward of having the baby. It's just this ongoing saga. I don't know,' she repeats. 'I'm interested to see what's going to happen next, you know?'

I ask her what's on the horizon. 'Make babies, make music,' she grins. 'I'm on repeat mode.' Just before flying to the UK she had lunch in Los Angeles with the rest of No Doubt. 'It would be ridiculous to say there was no tension. Because my solo career has been going on and on. It was never supposed to be this long ...' But at last, having delivered two albums in quick succession, she's 'really inspired' to go back and work with the band.

But before all that, the Sweet Escape Tour 2007 must travel around the world. If she was apprehensive during our London rendezvous she didn't show it. For one thing, it won't be as tough as her first solo tour, which she undertook even though she knew she was pregnant. Extra panels were sewn into her costumes to disguise the bump.

'It was hell on earth,' she confesses. 'But to look out and see girls from the age of eight to 15 in the front row - who obviously didn't know that I was pregnant even though I was feeling like a big fat huge whale - they were looking at me like I was Cinderella. And it was so ... amazing. So rewarding.

'But it's really going to be easier this time, because I have two whole records to choose from, and I have the experience of doing a more theatrical show. And I won't have a baby in my stomach!'

Her desire to start a family was well known - so much so the 'tick tock' motif in 'What You Waiting For' was widely believed to represent her biological clock going into overdrive. But what, I wonder, was her biggest fear about motherhood?

'Hmm,' she ponders. 'How I would fit him into my life? Would I be too self-obsessed to be able to care about him enough? I have a really extraordinary life and I obviously have a lot of passion about the things that I do. So I didn't know if I could be selfless enough. But obviously I can! It's the most amazing thing that's ever happened to me.'

Around about now, Gwen Stefani will be coming offstage in Adelaide and Kingston James McGregor Rossdale will be waiting for her on the tour bus. 'If I had to leave him at home and not bring him with me everywhere then I wouldn't do this,' Gwen Stefani told me. 'I know that's not going to last, and he's going to get more demanding and there will be school and stuff. But for now I get to do it all.'

Shame on them! Instead of protesting against the cruelty of the Talibans and taking up other more important issues, the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students is picking on a trivial matter like Gwen Stefani’s concert in Kuala Lumpur.

IT was merely a news item in a newspaper known more for its sensational news on crime and celebrities. Most Malaysians probably did not even know about the controversy as it was ignored by major dailies, but it did make its way around the world.

From the United States to Down Under, the call by the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students to ban Gwen Stefani’s concert in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 21 was given coverage.

The student group claiming to have 10,000 members achieved notoriety with a statement by its vice-president Abdul Muntaqim who purportedly said that the singer’s performance and attire were not suitable for Malaysian culture.

He reportedly said “it promotes a certain degree of obscenity and will encourage youths to emulate the Western lifestyle”.

Union president Mohamed Hilmi Ramli warned that the concert be cancelled, “failing which we will ask the authorities to intervene”.

Fuyoh! I am not sure whether Abdul Muntaqim and Mohamed Hilmi have watched Stefani’s videos but, seriously, my friend, no MTV fan can agree with you that flat-chested Stefani would fall under the sexy category.

Like many Malaysians, I am deeply troubled by the perception of these students.

The American singer, who is a mother of one, does not have an image problem and neither is she a frequent rehabilitation visitor, like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan. If we look at our own shores, we have Jamal Abdillah. I don’t recall the union pressing for a ban of his shows.

Yes, we can expect the diva, who has sold over tens of millions of albums worldwide, to kick up a storm with her Harajuku Girls, the four back-up singer-dancers from Japan, but certainly none of us would suffer moral decay, as the paranoid students fear.

The students are of course entitled to their views although I am surprised that they even deserve a space in that newspaper or that a reporter could have called them up for reaction to spice up the story and create controversy.

But how we wish that these students would speak up with the same passion against corruption, racism and abuse of power, which their predecessors had done at Universiti Malaya.

As an undergraduate from 1968 to 1971, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was the president of the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students and his cause then was rural poverty and hunger. It certainly was not pop concerts!

We have also not seen any statement from them to protest against the cruelty of the Talibans, which Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar has spoken against. Shame on them that they have to pick on a trivial matter like Stefani’s concert.

This is not the first time. I remember during the 1980s, when I was a student at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, that these PAS-inclined students demonstrated against the Alleycats’ concert in campus.

Here was a group of non-Malay singers performing Bahasa Malaysia songs to a packed audience of racially-mixed students and just outside were the demonstrators. Around the same time, another group of students staged a protest against Sheila Majid at Universiti Malaya.

PAS, for example, used to protest against pop concerts, using the same argument. But even the Kelantan state government has loosened up a bit by allowing concerts by Malay singers, never mind if the audience at these shows are gender segregated.

Realising the need to win young voters and shed its ultra-conservative image, the party leadership has attempted to take a more moderate view, even acknowledging that entertainment is acceptable.

Presumably, younger leaders like Datuk Husam Musa and Datuk Kamaruddin Jaafar have managed to re-brand PAS to be more palatable.

PAS leaders like Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat used to argue differently, but for the sake of political expediency, different views are now being put up.

Still, there are rumblings from certain sections of the party against TV3’s successful Jom Heboh series of concert-trade promotion shows, supposedly because of the free mingling of sexes. It is hardly convincing but there are enough PAS supporters who hold this view.

Despite the huge publicity given to the student body’s statement by newspapers and websites abroad, including one headlined Malaysia says no to Gwen Stefani show, and an introductory paragraph in Music, a popular American pop music site, that said “Those crazy Malaysians are at it again – citing indecency and provocativeness, the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students has called Gwen Stefani obscene and offensive,” the fact is that it does not speak for the rest of Malaysians.

THERE will be no revealing costumes at US singer Gwen Stefani's concert in Malaysia this month, a newspaper reported, after a Muslim student group demanded that the event be cancelled as being too obscene.

Although Malaysia is a moderate Muslim country with sizeable non-Muslim minorities, conservative groups often frown upon departures from strict Koranic injunctions.

Malaysian mobile phone firm Maxis Communications, which is promoting the August 21 show as part of Stefani's "Sweet Escape" tour, promised it would feature no revealing costumes, the Star newspaper said.

"She will abide by the Malaysian authorities' guidelines to ensure that her show will not be offensive to local sensibilities," it quoted a Maxis statement as saying.

Malaysia's official guide for performers says women must be covered from the top of the bosom to the knees, the Star said.

Jumping, shouting and the throwing of objects are barred, while performers may not hug, kiss or wear clothes with obscene or drug-related pictures or slogans, it added.

On Tuesday, an official of the 10,000-strong National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students said Stefani's video promotion clips were obscene and the event would clash with local Asian and Islamic values.

"We want the organisers to cancel the concert, failing which we will ask the authorities to intervene," said Mohamad Hilmi Ramli, the group's president.

Ethnic Malays, who are by definition Muslims, make up just over half of Malaysia's 26 million people, while ethnic Chinese and Indians, who are mostly Buddhists, Christians or Hindus, account for most of the rest.

Although her solo career is less than three years old, Gwen Stefani has been one of pop music's leading female voices for over a decade.

As the vivacious focus of the blockbuster Californian ska/pop outfit No Doubt, Stefani has happily played the alluring (though, according to her confessional lyrics, occasionally spurned) frontwoman.

The 37-year-old has been an intrepid solo act, creating two albums of sometimes strange, mostly exciting and occasionally bewilderingly rhythmic pop. Her disparate range of singles have included silly cheerleader chants, nostalgic ballads, hip-hop beats, and Sound of Music-sampling calls to arms. All this in the midst of becoming a mum for the first time.

Her first Melbourne concert as a solo artist last night, reflected all of these styles. A packed crowd of around 12,000 predominantly female fans lapped up a sugary 90-minute show.

With just two solo albums to draw from, her set, although encompassing spiky pop hits such as Wind It Up, What You Waiting For? and Rich Girl, would unquestionably have benefited from a couple of her nimble rock hits from No Doubt.

There were some outrageously quirky moments. Yummy, a ludicrous song in its own right, was rendered even more eccentric by delivery three tracks in.

Stefani's infamous Japanese fashionistas Harajuku Girls played their part last night, mostly as backing dancers.

As the show progressed, Stefani, who looked in fantastic shape, began to be weighed down by the number of ballads selected.

Granted, some of them worked - namely Cool, with its new-wave inspired chorus, which saw her climbing into the crowd to sing it.

While this solo phase has delivered Stefani some huge hits, you get the feeling it's a phase she is almost done with.

Well, on Thursday I was too far back, but last night I was in third row with kara.little.lamb, and coollamb did it last night, so I thought I'd give it a go, I really, honestly didn't expect it to work, but I made a sign that had "Can I have a photo with you?" on one side...(I think NxDCrashNxD did it first...But it worked, so you know.)
So between songs, I was holding it up, and screaming, and theis girl in the front row had a bigger sign (don't know what it said, being behind her and all) so Gwen asked her up, and I was like..."NOooooo!" Coz Kara & I were right there, all dressed up, knowing all the words and that. ANd I'm thinking...Dammit, should be us....
So I scream some more, really hoping she'll see it, and she looks up and goes "Everyone will want one..." and I was thinking she wasn't going to let me, but then she motions for me to come forward, so I clamber over the next two rows, nearly fall down, and give her the camera. She tried to take it herself, but it didnt work, so she gave it to a Harajuku girl who took that.

I was so overwhelmed, I forgot to even say thank you. My friends said I was on the screen when it was happening. But at the very end of the show, Gwen sorta mouthed 'thank you' to me & Kara, and so I shouted "Thank You!!!!" back.

GWEN Stefani has put the fun back into pop music. And her first Melbourne solo show last night reminded you that pop concerts are meant to be exciting.

Like her idol, Madonna, Stefani may not be the best singer or dancer in the world but the whole package makes for a great entertainer.

And like Madonna, she has re-invented herself from rock frontwoman to solo pop star.

While she is now competing with teenagers, she has 20 years of experience under her belt.

She's warm and engaging, taking a picture of herself with a fan's camera and asking where to take her baby son, Kingston, while in Melbourne.

Where other pop stars trade on vocal acrobatics, or near nudity, Stefani's live show is full of theatre and pantomime.

Indeed her audience is packed with kids who look like they're at their first concert.

Catchy hits Rich Girl, 4 In the Morning, Cool and Hollaback Girl thrilled the widely diverse crowd.

While her second album Sweet Escape is patchy, Yummy is the show's low point, Wonderful Life and Early Winter add much-needed heart.

And the concert ends with her finest moment What You Waiting For.

The show demonstrated she's a hero to legions of young girls.

At least compared with the likes of the Pussycat Dolls, who are more lap dancers than pop stars, Stefani strikes a blow for talented, creative women in pop

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: U.S. pop singer Gwen Stefani will not wear revealing costumes during her concert in Malaysia, the show's organizer said Thursday, after protests from Muslim students about her sexy outfits and steamy acts.

Maxis Communications Bhd. said it "respects the values and conventions of this country" and pledged that Stefani would follow the local code of ethics for foreign artists, which bans the unnecessary baring of skin.

"Gwen Stefani has confirmed that her concert will not feature any revealing costumes. She will abide by the Malaysian authorities' guidelines to ensure that her show will not be offensive to local sensitivities," it said in a statement to The Associated Press.

Maxis, the country's biggest mobile phone company, said tickets were selling fast.

Maxis hopes to attract some 9,000 people to the Aug 21. concert, which is part of the 37-year-old singer's Sweet Escape world tour that also includes Australia, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand.

The National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students, which has some 10,000 members, charged that Stefani's skimpy dressing and cheeky performances clashed with Islamic values.

"Her performance and her attire are not suitable for our culture. It promotes a certain degree of obscenity and will encourage youth to emulate the western lifestyle. The concert should be stopped," the union's vice president, Abdul Muntaqim, told The AP.

Ethnic Malay Muslims form about 60 percent of Malaysia's population, with ethnic Chinese and Indians of Christian, Buddhist and Hindu faiths forming most of the rest.

Siti Zaleha Baba, a senior official at the Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry, said the concert would go on but enforcement officers would meet Stefani before the concert to remind her about local guidelines as well as monitor her stage act.

"There is no problem so far. (The concert promoter) has told us what clothes she will wear for the concert," she added.

Under the official guide to performing in Malaysia, a female artist needs to cover from the top of her chest to her knees including shoulders. No jumping, shouting or throwing of objects on stage or at the audience is allowed. Performers can also not hug or kiss and their clothes must not have obscene or drug-related images or messages.

A local company, which organized a PussyCat Dolls concert last year, was fined 10,000 ringgit (US$2,857, €2,091) after the U.S. all-girl group was found to have flouted decency regulations.

Thanks for the great wristbands, Debbie. I got that new hoodie and the "I've been a real bad girl" tank.
We were going so nuts, I hit my shin on the back of the chair in front of me and nearly fell forwards. But it was so worth it. Gwen pointed at us more than once, and we were even on the big screen for a few seconds during Cool.

We waited around for an hour afterwards to see her, but when she finally came, she just waved and got in the car. Before her, we did see some harajuku girls, plus gabe and Stephen. When he was leaving, Stephen was leaning out the window yelling "Go Melbourne!"

Gwen Stefani is Melbourne-bound for the next leg of her tour. She was spotted leaving Sydney airport on Wednesday with fellow bleached-blonde hubby Gavin Rossdale and their son Kingston, 14 months. Gwen is set to go all-out at the Rod Laver Arena during the Thursday and Friday concerts.

Earlier in the day, the Hollaback girl and son were seen at Sydney’s Featherdale Wildlife Park. Before going into the park, mommy Gwen stops to introduce Kingston to a few little ladies (pictured below).

Says Gwen of cutie Kingston: “He’s stupidly cute, it’s crazy. Just yesterday he was different, his personality is adorable.”
